Got mine today, and I can't get any sound from the speaker on the back of the unit. The headphone output works fine, but this is unacceptable. Am I overlooking something?

There are some settings in sound section but if you've got sound at the headphone jack the settings are probably OK. Seems these cheaper tablets have an issue with speaker quality, my wife's Coby 7022 blew its speaker after only 2 months. If it were me I would see if I could find a replacement myself or deal with the long wait and expense to re-send it..

Has anyone compared the Novo 7 and Novo 8? The 8 is obviously larger and has way higher resolution but looks like the processor is slower? hmm.

Sale ends today FYI. Looks like I am going to order another one and send the one I got yesterday back for a refund.

FWIW, I paid extra for YanWen Express.

Ordered on 10/30, it was shipped 11/3. It arrived on US soil (FedEX) on the 7th and is arriving at my door today.

Overall, not too shabby. I hope it's a good one. Thanks again, OP, for the heads up on this.

I think mine was sent out via mule and cart...

It's a mule and cart until they get to the ocean, then they strap your package to a dolphin and let him swim across the Pacific until he hits land, at which point it gets taken over by the Pony Express. 14-21 business days, apparently...ouch

Since my wife has essentially stolen mine I've been looking at used Viewsonic G's on Ebay, they can be had for around $200, have a fast Tegra 2 dual core CPU and some very nice custom ROM's out for it plus it's a "10 screen..

Im writing this message from my new novo 7 advanced. I bought it in hong kong a few days ago.

First impressions...
feels built solidly
resolution is bright and sharp
Touchpad is responsive enough even with screen protector
Browses fast with good connection but seems to have a hard time with weak connection strengths
speaker is not great but headphone jack is excellent with earbuds
Overall pretty fast for a stock tablet esp. In this price range

Remote is cool but not sure how to use it because my instructions are in chinese

Anybody have them in english?

marketplace NOT installed

How do i root this thing to get android marketplace?

Flash to 1.7 firmware will give you market, instructions at slatedroid link noted above. The remote supposedly works on the stock 1.5 and they are working on getting it added to a later update, I don't have a use for the remote so not a big deal to me..

So i had a couple of days to "play" with the unit before giving it to my son for this birthday.

Plus:
- For $140, it's a good tablet. Colors are vivid, touchscreen is quite responsive and it's generally snappy.
- Battery seems to be just fine with the screen at near full and sound at max, 3 hours so far but i've had to plug it in just to make sure it's on full-charge to do the firmware upgrades.
- HG Video is pretty good, too
- Amazon App store works just fine

Minuses:
- The thing just can't get recognized in Windows. I've tried nearly every single driver i could find and all the how-to's and support threads on Slatedroid, MP4Nation and a couple other boards. Because of this, i can't install the new firmware of Android Market. If anyone knows of a trick nobody else has come up with, i'd truly appreciate it.
- Getjar doesn't work either. It's stuck as "0%" download on every single app i tried downloading. Some support forums hint at the fact that Getjar doesn't (a) work with the default browser and (b) It somehow redirects to the real market, so you need Android Market to make Getjar work... counter intuitive if you ask me.

On that note, does anyone know of a legit site i can download game APKs from? My kid really would like to get Restaurant Story, City Story and that family of games installed. Amazon only has Farm Story.

Thanks, all.

I ordered my replacement Novo 7A 10 days ago, and shelled out $22 for the "expedited shipping". Still hasn't even been shipped yet. Merimobiles sucks...

You should have no problem but you have to use the USB cable that came with it, livesuite will prompt you for the usb driver during the flash, point it to the drivers and it should work. Also make sure "USB debugging" mode is enabled (in storage settings), hope this helps..

Got mine the other day (last week) and finaly figured out how to update it to 1.7.2 and got the older version market which I liked better anyhow... You go here which is the correct link to update it...
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/23874-firmware-ainol-novo-7-advanced-firmware-update-172-repackaged/
Scroll down to the 10th post and download the PDF file it is quite simple... But do it exactly like they say and be sure to give it time to complete and do not unplug the tablet from your PC...

BTW it took a full 3 weeks via the free shipping so just sit back and relax it will come though it takes time...

rootit rootaxs!

, oddly enough i think it's already rooted as i can peruse the entire directory structure and change permissions.

I'm starting to think there's something wrong with the unit itself, perhaps the USB port is damaged or has wires crossed. It's own cable included, none of my other known good cables worked with it. And i've tried doing it on 4 other machines to no avail.

All that said, i did manage to get an old version of market installed by following the same procedure for the Coby 7012. Problem is, it's crippled... only a bunch of random and old apps are showing. I'm now looking into a way to change the ID's on the Ainol. I hear most of the Samsung/Droid ID's will work in opening up to 85% of the Market.

In the meantime, i just side-loaded apk's to get it functional enough for my kiddo.

Stock tablets should not be rooted unless it's advertised as so as a service to the end user. Does anything happen at all when the USB is plugged in? is the unit set for "USB debugging" mode? What window's OS are you using?, we can fix this I bet, lets work the problem..

^ Thank you, Butch. Your help is much appreciated.

I've tried it on 2 Win7-64 machines, a Mac and an XP-32 machine. It's a bit convoluted with the latter two, but the final effect is the same -- an install error and is marked as such in Device Manager (in Win). I've tried the various tricks for the driver bypass and/or driver update post this part to no avail. The only thing i haven't tried yet is going going through Google's Android dev kit which supposedly helps in situations where an android device is not recognized as such.

Originally, i thought it was a bad cable so i tried various other known good cables as well as direct connections to the USB ports on each of these machines (as opposed to hubs). The unit is set to USB debugging, but it doesn't seem to make any difference with that option turned on or off at least as far as Windows recognition is concerned.
