I have yet to see a single mmo come out with a state of the art graphics engine. If your game has to deal with hundreds of people in the same location at one point in time you don't want to see the FPS hit you take even with a good amount of RAM and a great GPU.

On another note, I'm not sure if anyone from anandtech intended to make a legion where a bunch of us can play but I have one up and running. Entropy Guild name is Entropy and we'll be playing asmo if anyone is interested.

Sorry if I'm not allowed to post that here but would be good to see an AT crew.

I think there are some fair complaints with the open beta listed here - lots of lag so far and GameGuard is annoying. That being said, I've been pretty impressed with it. The flight system really does some depth and isn't just a gimmick like I thought it would be. There's also a high degree of polish in the game in the portion which I've experienced. It's definitely not a WoW killer, but it is a competitor and I think it will do fairly well. There are a lot of niceties that aren't immediately obvious but it has a pretty amazing quest tracker if that's your thing.

The graphics and user interface are both quite solid at high res with AA. Better yet, I've been in some pretty crowded areas now and haven't had my fps dip below 40. It compares favorably to any of the MMO's I've played on those grounds so I don't quite understand the criticisms there.

Quick question (and apologies if it's been answered here... I'm in a "Friday mood" in regard to reading all 5 pages), but I signed up for the open beta and I never like installing "download managers" from websites. Do I have to install the IGN Download Manager to download the Aion client or is there another method?

Played the beta all night. I also played the Fallen Earth beta, and there really is no comparison. This is infinitely more polished.

Me and a couple friends will go to Trinitrel server. I don't know about any server that is good out there, we just kinda pick 1 and stick with it. I heard some hardcore arena wow guilds is going to Siel server, so I will stay away from that one.

decided to download the beta finally and check it out.

I almost deleted the stupid thing before i even played it.

NCSoft requires you to have a CD KEY for their OPEN BETA.. but yet their website gives out no cd keys nor makes any mention you actually need one.

I went to Fileplanet to get one..

I'm hoping i'm wrong about this game, but first impression seriously not good. 2ndly, its published by NCSoft. Enough said.

Hmm, the new patch changed the movement system to similar to wow now, I like it a lot. It is also add in the rest bonus too. Not sure, what else it added.

Even I, who doesn't like most MMOs, find a decision based on a two minute intro experiance to be a bit ...fast.

There has to be a basic play mechanic (like no WASD) or a real style mismatch to do that for me. Of course, I like Japanese graphics, so that's no personal disad here.

Just played it for an hour before they brought the servers down for an update (in beta no less!). I really liked the atmosphere and character stylings in the game and the helpful UI interface for quests so you can find out where you have to actually go. I still have to work out how the gathering system works since I'm not too sure about the pass/fail thing. Other than that it's been a good experience thus far. Looking forward to playing it on the 20th.

I played it by using a key from Fileplanet - $6 to try out a game that might well buy seemed fair enough to me.

I had the lag problem last weekend which made it unplayable - but I played on/off this weekend and made it to level 11 Chanter. Far enough along to get Wings and see the capital city (I think that thing must be the capital city).

Overall it's ok. It seems like a competent MMORPG but I didn't see what made it better than other games like WoW except that it's not WoW for everyone who is tired of WoW. It seemed well designed, and I liked the graphical style and the graphic details and effects. I didn't get to PvP - it's a shame they set the levels so high... I like the Warhammer "shove them into PvP at level 1" method and I wished that I'd tried PvP more before I passed my personal judgement on the game.

Based on comparable play time, at level 11 (or it's comparable level) I rank Aion:

1. Star Wars Galaxies - the original, way back when it came out, before Jedi (although I was on the server when the first guy got Jedi). SWG was my favorite - hard to decide where level 11 was in SWG tho.
2. World of Warcraft - by level 11, I thought this game was the greatest ever.
3. Warhammer - I liked this game a lot - particularly at the beginning.
4. Aion
5. Lord of the Rings Online - I could never get into LotRO
6. Age of Conan - Was not much impressed at all.
7. Vanguard - wish they'd had an pseudo-Open Beta like Aion so that I could have saved my money.

Never played anything else.

After I finished playing tonight I decided that I won't buy Aion. It was a close call. I really thought about it. I liked it, but not enough to buy it. Thought that a week's worth of play was worth $6 to Fileplanet though.
