Well, I finally just went ahead and bought it. If it sucks, that's $50 down the drain. Oh well.

I played AoC very briefly and thought the graphics were great and the combat was interesting, but quickly figured that the game wouldn't last. Too many bugs, too much unbalance of classes, and too many complaints not being addressed (until much later, apparently). I think I spent an entire 3-4 days on the game.

I played WAR for roughly two weeks. Like many other MMOs, it had a few features that really looked good on paper. Outdoor scenarios for example, or whatever they call them - the repeating events for items / xp; the first few times they were kinda fun and really rewarding, but after the 5th time you do a particular event it gets old fast. Some events were completely void of other players as well. Overall the worst part about the game was the huge PvP focus combined with the horrible slowness of the UI. In WoW, when I hit "1" five times in rapid succession, I expect my Frostbolt (or whatever) to cast immediately when comes off of cooldown / global cooldown. In WAR, I always felt like there was a .5 - 1 second gap between when I clicked the button to use a skill and when it actually cast. Not a huge deal for a relaxed PvE game, but with the focus on PvP, it was devastating. I didn't find PvP any more fun than similar games either.

So far Aion has been decent. I'm level 18, and so far the level of polish does show. I can't stand the random non-sense voices they use for some actions (thankfully I'm a Gladiator, so I don't have to listen to myself cast), and I think some more English voice acting would be a nice touch. There are several minor bugs here and there, but I haven't found anything game-breaking. Flying... well, gliding... is a complete blast. Even in areas where you normally can't fly, you can still jump off of a slight cliff or hill and glide as far as you can make it (finally landing when you hit an incline). Combat is so-so; I find chain skills more of a nuisance than a benefit, though it is nice not to have to use up 10 action bar spots just for normal combat, in addition to dozens of skills that you just may need from time to time. Quests are for the most part what I've come to expect of recent MMOs unfortunately - go here, kill this guy, collect these, talk to him, save my missing so-and-so. Ugh. The graphics are much better than a lot of the competition, but I still find textures for foliage and certain decals like ropes to be sadly lacking (we still have 2-dimensional ropes? C'mon...). Overall, I don't think Aions success so far has much to do with Aion offering anything new or innovative; it's more the fact that Aion is far more polished, so similar games just look like crap.

Comment on graphics:
While some of the land textures are disapointing the character models have amazing detail.

I think I may want to play this. I'm looking for an MMO I can play semi casually and have a good time. I'm sick of WoW and want something a bit different. I'm not a huge PVP'er though. I enjoyed things in WoW such as crafting, leveling, auction house, bank...etc. Is Aion more like Warhammer? If so I may not be interested.

I wouldn't really define Aion as casual...

at all....

And yes its kind of like Warhammer, its what Warhammer should have been to start.

If you're not into pvp I don't Aion would really be for you. I've met people in game who like the pve in Aion but wish it wasn't focused on pvp, but that's how the game was designed.

I do like SOME pvp in an MMO, I just don't like it to be the focus. Mainly I don't like trying to play a game while some no lifer constantly griefs me.

What would be a better MMO suggestion for me? I loved WoW...just grew tired of it.

Never understood this mentality.

Because someone kills you in a PVP zone you automatically assume they have no life? Ever think they kill you because its fun and the reason for being in a pvp zone in the first place?

For most PVPers red=dead. Its called war and you are no exception to it. Only the ass hats will sit their and camp you for hours on end...in that case grab some guildies and repay him the favor.

I don't understand the flipside mentality either. If my goal that night playing is to level, quest, etc, then grabbing guildies to repay some loser a favor is slowing down my progress even more so. Therefore the griefer still wins by wasting even more of my time. If I wanted to constantly fight people, I'd play an FPS. Instanced pvp such as battlegrounds are more my tastes.

Aion isn't the game for you then. Pvp happens as soon as you reach level 20+ zone and the end game is focus around pvp.

I know a lot of people have said don't play it because of PVP but I think they're crazy. A few things you should know:

You can go much farther than level 20 without having to PVP, sure it might not be the fastest way to level but it is possible.

Check out this guide that is designed to show you how to avoid PVP while leveling! http://www.aionsource.com/foru...unwanted-pvp-aion.html

In terms of crafting, Aion is among the best in its crafting mechanics. Everyone has the exact same gather skill so instead of having to pick a gathering skill and a crafting skill in WoW, you can pick and master two crafting skills. Any mats you can't use still level up your gathering skill. This means more money in your pocket from all the high-end mats you don't personally need!

To make things even more interesting, you can learn every other crafting skill in the game up to the very last level but not master it. I've found that the way you level crafting (work orders) is very enjoyable and even though it costs a lot of money you get some great rewards out of it as well.

Comparing this game to WAR puts shame to the work the Aion devs have done to create solid PVE in their PVP focused game. Unlike WAR the instances in Aion are designed without flaw.

Anyone who played WAR here can attest to the general bugginess and lack of detail in every instance within the game. Not only were there long lockouts, but if someone had to leave halfway through you couldn't even bring in a different member... essentially locking everyone out of the instance!

Granted, the main feature of this game is the Abyss which is a pvp heaven. You would be sorely missing out if you were to not venture into the abyss in my opinion.

I personally love leveling in the Abyss because you are constantly on the lookout for the enemy as you EXPECT them to show up. There is no 'ganking' in the abyss in my mind as the place was designed for the two factions to cross paths and fight.

So in summary: Even though the game has a heavy PVP focus there is plenty of room for the casual player who enjoys a long leveling period and loves to craft. I truthfully believe you would easily get your moneys worth out of this game!
