air flow for the Alpha

Just wondering which way I should shoot the fan on the heatsink? should I have it blow air over the heatsink or should I have it suck? Anyone got any good links for installing one of these?

i just bought a pal6035 (put it together a couple hours ago actually), and ive heard that alpha reccomends sucking the air up from the heatsink. there have been a couple reviews where theyve seen temp drops around 1-2 degrees with the fan sucking air up. as far as installing, it should be pretty strait forward but ive seen a few reviews around with instructions. i bought a copper shim for mine too (dont need to crush that new 1ghz tbird).

Alphas sucks!!!! The fan on most setups work better if you set it to suck.

alphas do not suck. they are very high performers. my arctic cooler is better and quieter though

I believe that he was commenting on how the air flow should go. It depends a lot on how the whole systems air flow is setup. I have an exhaust fan that sits perfectly above and to the left of my HedgeHog (same as Alpha, but all copper), so that makes it perfect for having the air being sucked off of the heatsink. If you just have the power supply as an exhaust fan, then positioning the fan so that it blows onto the heatsink would probably be the best. Thats just my experience though. Your results would probably be different. Also, you have to make sure you take the shroud off when putting the fan on to blow onto the heatsink.

If you have good air flow inside your case and the temp is good put the fan so it pulls the air from the cpu. If your case temp is hot turn the fan so it blows onto the heatsink. Though I would try both and see which works for you. When i installed mine it was running with the fan directed towards the cpu and I was getting 42-45c, when i turned the fan my temps dropped to 37-40c. good luck..

A heatsinkfan that sucks, should have a shroud that has a gap all around it at the base of the heatsink...this forces the air entering the HSF to enter near the CPU where the heat reduction is most critical..a fan that blows towards the HSF doesn't need a shroud

Alpha's do have shrouds, as do Hedgehogs.
