Just reading an article about a squardron of Airforce fighters being deployed and was wondering how many aircraft a typical squadron has in it. Does it depend on the type, is it always the same, and do they all have to be the same kind of aircraft?

Why do you want to know?

Fighter Squadrons are typically one aircraft. (F-16s,F-15s,F-22s,A-10s)
and the heavies (c-130, C-5, etc.) are usually assigned to air lift squadrons.

I think he meant to say one type of aircraft.

typically a squadron is a pretty focused group, concentrated on one task. That being said, I have never heard of a squadron having more than one type of aircraft.

flight < squadron < wing < group < major command

We always had around 15-25 F-15 or F-16 per squadron. Much less for bomber squadrons and airlift squadrons.

To my knowledge, there is not a squadron in existence that has more than one airframe. There are Groups that have more than one airframe, but they aren't very common in the Air Force. Typically, Groups (and Wings) are single airframe units, but there are composite units around though they are the exception.

Your list is incorrect: flight - squadron - group - wing - numbered Air Force - MAJCOM

As for the number of aircraft per squadron, that can vary from 2 to 24 or so depending on the airframe (or even 1 for that matter). No matter what the maximum number is, there are probably no units in existence with all airframes fully mission capable at one time except for those with only a handful.

According to the wiki article: An air force, army aviation or naval aviation squadron typically consists of three or four flights, with a total of 12 to 24 aircraft, depending on aircraft type and air force.

But i bet an F22 Raptor is a squadron by itself.

The wiki article is so general as to be close to useless. OP question concerns USAF assets deploying.

F-22 aircraft are organized into traditional fighter squadrons and have numbers on the higher end of the range.

The question should be, how many treadmills will it take to make sure that squadron can't take off!
