All liquids, gels and aerosols must be in three-ounce or smaller containers. Larger containers that are half-full or toothpaste tubes rolled up are not allowed. Each container must be three ounces or smaller.

so this tells me that water has to be in a 3oz bottle?

<-------- hates to buy overpriced water at the airport stores

No, you have to buy it past the security gate

And I'm sure it makes us all safer somehow.... Or... not

You can get more water when your plane crashes into the ocean.

Bring empty bottle and fill it up at water fountain past security.

I'm surprised how many people don't think to do that

People are idiots, they think bottled water tastes better or is somehow better for you.

My GF buys bottled water religiously. But she buys it because of convenience on the go and most certainly BETTER taste by fucking far compared to tap.

I think those are common reasons for most people, not so much because it's healthier.

All depends where you live.
Some places have nice tap water, some don't. If you live where the tap water sucks, then it's understandable to an extent.

Well normally you're right.. but public water taps can be pretty fucking disgusting. I wouldn't go to the average bathroom in an airport and fill my water bottle...

and people suck on the water fountain nozzles, so they're nasty too.

overpriced? what airport do you go to? In Logan, they have "newsstand" at every terminal. It cost $1.39 for a bottled water.

Yes, almost a buck and a half for what's essentially a 50-cent bottle of water is oh so reasonable, isn't it?

OP, I'd say it would depend on your airport security folks. If you're carrying it, and it's either sealed (not opened yet), or you're willing to drink from it, you might get through without a problem. If, however, you start acting really nervous when they question you about it, you might end up rescheduling your flight (or being put on the DO NOT FLY list!).

I usually just bring an empty one to avoid hassle and fill it at a water fountain after security.

In Beijing they inspected our carry on luggage at the gate to remove liquids. I was kind of pissed since I just spent $ at the vending machine that was right in front of gate (figured I'd bring my own drink so I wouldn't have to annoy the stewardess).
