When a reporter asked if the governor was in love with the adviser he’s rumored to have had an affair with, Bentley said: “I love many members of my staff, in fact, all the members of my staff. Do I love some more than others, absolutely.”

Republicans have been known to eat their own. I wonder how Bentley got on the wrong side of his legislature. This obviously isn't about adultery per se. That's just the implement, not the reasons to use it.

They'll forgive him. immoral republican politicians are far, far, far better than equally immoral dems in every single republican's mind.

hell, this guy will probably have a cabinet position within the year.

These actions are unbecoming and indicative of someone unfit to represent others in government.

In what way do they relate to his political party?

his political party declared itself the party of morals long long ago and his voting record does not match his hypocrisy.

He is a hypocrite to his party, but does that somehow invalidate Republicans?

Personally I think that the general "party of morals and values, etc." is exploitative and idealized.

But so is the environmentalism and minority rights stance of Democrats.

In each case there are true believers and people who abuse ideals for political purposes.

The perversion of sex among humans is the result of being made to feel dirty as a child for having sexual feelings. Once a person has internalized this tremendously powerful human need as something that is evil to express, it will express in ways the person has been told are evil because the need is real. It will happen, therefore, that a lot more of this kind of sexual repression will occur in conservative culture because it is religion that is the most common carrier of this, the body is evil, disease. But sexual repression is universal in our culture so we are all carriers of the disease. That is the source of the contempt for those who express it. It is political only in the sense that it is in fundy Christian homes that are the most infected with this disease. But it is condemnation that perpetuates the disease, when we condemn others for it and our children for having sexual feelings.

The point is that while there can be a political connection with more Republicans falling to this disease than Democrats, for the above reasons, to turn the issue into a partisan you're worse than me is to miss the point that we all have this disease and we need psychological and spiritual work to do something about it, Self hate destroys everything. It is the source of hatred of others and why we demonize and condemn. It's a mote and beam issue.

a lie is a lie, period.

just shows how vacuous your morals are, just like the governor.
Shows you how big a liar you are, like your President Clinton. If you like your President, you can keep your President! Period! Like your President Obama.
Glass house, meet alien.

What an ass, get rid of him.

How many times do we have to go through this song and dance before everybody acknowledges that this behavior has nothing to do with party, and that both parties have a tendency to want to crucify the other when one of them does something sleazy, but tries to circle the wagons when one of their own does something. They only stop circling the wagons to protect their own when it becomes politically untenable. Rinse, repeat.

To summarize what people have said in a somewhat more reasonable way: what he did wouldn't be so bad if it weren't that Republicans pitched themselves as the party of "family values" (read: conservative Christian values). I mean, cheating on a spouse is a bad thing for people across the political spectrum, but set some realistic expectations.

That and the party has a history of "do as I say, not as I do" ironies. There's almost a golden rule, even: the more a Republican exhibits homophobia, the more likely it is that they're hiring gay prostitutes on the side (which would be fine if they were honest about it).

This absolutely doesn't excuse Weiner, Bill Clinton or other Democrats who've conducted sexual behavior that's broadly regarded as unacceptable. But the GOP really can't claim any moral high ground when it comes to sexuality... especially not when its President has cheated on two wives (and likely raped one) and bragged about sexual assault. If the party were as puritanical as it claimed to be, Trump wouldn't have even made it past the primaries.

I think you're confusing "voting for Trump because the prospect of Hillary seems even worse" with "voting for Trump because I approve of his personal dealings and moral values".

For the record, I voted for neither of them because I can't stomach either of them.

Whether they portray themselves as the party of family values or not doesn't affect how bad the actions are. It makes someone a hypocrite if they espouse family values while engaging in these sleazy activities, but it doesn't change the severity of the inappropriate behavior.
