BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A powerful and radical Shiite cleric implored his followers Sunday to stop killing Iraqis and focus their violent efforts on ousting American forces from the war-torn nation.

Muqtada al-Sadr also called on Iraqi forces to join the insurgents in the battle against "the occupiers."

This is a very troubling development, looks like we woke up the hornets nest with our so called Baghdad surge. The last couple days Al Sadars followers have been fighting U.S. forces across shite controlled areas. All hell is going to break loose if things dont change on the ground. Iran probley gave Al Sadr the green light to step up to the next level against the U.S.

 Kudos to Sadr for condemning sectarian violence.

This probably had something to do with the American air strikes against Sadr's militia this past week.

Thx blackangst I actually have it clocked down to 3.44ghz now 24/7 usage. Was @ 3.56 for max stable OC benched.

Anyway It would be interesting to see what happens in Iraq the next 1-3 years I believe we are at another major crossroads which is increasingly looking like the path of chaos and anarchy in Iraq. I think its good to take a look at oil futures and other oil plays if your into the stock market. I can definately see oil north $80 a barrel if Iraq heads into complete chaos.

I just don't see it that way---AL-Sadr is just searching for something to say that makes him appeal to all Iraqis---when part of his real goal is ethnic cleansing of all Sunni in Iraq and the other part is the seeking of raw power.

Nor do I think that even his followers will pay much attention---Al-Sadr is astride the tiger of anarchy---and just thinks he presently matters--its likely that he too will be bucked off and devoured by the very tiger he rides.---GWB is made of safer stuff---and just sends our sons and daughters off to feed the tiger of his own making---while complaining on how hard it is to be the decider.--------the ox of stupidity has always been the safer and more docile beast to ride.

Because Al Sadr has at least some level of support or respect from the majority group of Iraq (Shiite). And he is instrumental in providing support propping up the coalition of Prime Minister al-Maliki.

Interestingly, at the start of the war Al Sadr was marginalized as he had been under Saddam, enjoyed very little support for his violent methods, and the US was considering killing or capturing him but backed down. Over time as the country has become more divided along sectarian lines, Shiites have become accepting of his violent methods.

It was a huge mistake not to arrest this guy way back at the start.
He has been nothing but trouble to us.

Could have arrested his ass, tried him for murder and sent him away.
Would have pissed off a lot of people, but they would have forgot about him with time.

BTW do we know if he is in Iraq or Iran?

I am sure many are saying the same about GWB non Prof John---just should have assassinated or impeached GWB long ago---but not terrorists---GWB has been their #1 recruiter.
They want him in place---he is doing their job for terrorists.

But us silly liberals---always too high minded to do things the easy and illegal way.

And ponder another question---the last time we went after Al-Sadr---Sistani---who has more Iraqi charisma in his beard cuttings than anyone else in Iraq saved Al-Sadr's butt.
Since then Sistani has lapsed into a disgusted and pessimistic silence after being a powerful advocate of the US bringing democracy to Iraq---right now---any US led assassination
of AL-Sadr risks pissing off Sistani-----and the second Sistani takes up the banner of the fallen AL-Sadr and starts saying get Americans---is the very second that our Iraqi occupation becomes totally untenable.

^^ Yes, but the all powerful U.S. is exempt from the rules it applies to others! You didn't know that?

There's a 100,000 strong protest going on over there, with all of them demanding the U.S. leaves. Will we listen to the people? Somehow I doubt it.

Come on Muqtada al-Sadr is the biggest idiot on the planet the more crap he pulls the longer Coalition forces have to stay and that moron can't even do the freaking math.

He is nothing more than an out of control psychopath who would send his followers to their death like they were toys for his amusement.

I hope he gets a cluster bomb squarely up his butt god knows he deserves it!
