I was one of those votes for Doug Jones today. Granted, I was voting for him before Moore's assault of teenage girls became public.
What happened tonight is a contest between objective reality and belief. Many folks in Alabama clung to a belief that the allegations by 7 or 9 women, and their 30+ friends and family who all knew of the assaults 30+ years ago were all false. They had faith in a champion. Others, however, took to the facts of the case and made their own judgements. Justice has now been served for a predator who preyed on a high school classroom up to the point of returning to marry one of them. Thank you Alabama for finding a just end.
It was a close contest. Many folks are not objective, many folks are not attached to reality. It's a fascinating phenomena, and we can only truly begin to study and observe this effect, in full, in the modern age of the internet. There literally are alternative facts being used... and respected as if they are equal. (They are not). And contact with the truth is not enough. It takes a more concerted, careful, and detailed effort to crack this nuttery. Alabama barely edged above it to stop a predator, but they do not rise above it to stop harmful economic policies.
As a nation, let us stop and reflect how we might do better. And that it begins, as always, one step at a time.
