Trump is now more vulnerable than ever to impeachment. Not only is there one more senator not on his side, but the reasons for Republicans to back him just decreased remarkably. He was a fluke and everything he touches turns to the opposite of gold. Maybe Pence would do better.

I think this is the pivot point for Trump and the alt-right, but I don't think Moore has added enough weight. Too easy to attribute his loss to molestation accusations. What scares me more is seeing the voting breakdown by race. It seems more about who has turned up to vote than who has changed their mind about who to vote for. Of course, non-participation is also an expression of opinion.

My vision of a strong Democratic Party is one that speak to the 99% with policy that helps all of them.

They can't. It's just not possible.

A person making $40,000 in BFE Nebraska has a vastly different quality of life than someone making $20k in the south side of Chicago. Somebody making $90k in Nashville has a very different quality of life that person making $40,000 in Nebraska. Somebody making $200k in San Fran has nothing in common with somebody banking 2 million or more in NYC. And that person making 2 million is nothing in comparison to somebody rolling in billionaire club.

The disparity in incomes and the impact on quality of life make it virtually impossible to come up with a "unified" platform. Someone, or a lot of someones in that 99% are going to lose something and that is a very hard sell.

I don't know what the answer is.

Ok, Alabama is, broadly speaking, socially backwards and less educated. But, according to NPR radio, only 45% of college educated white women voted for Jones over that horse-mounting pedophile. That's up from 34% of white women overall. Is this all that a college education is worth? I'd like to see how many of this demographic think evolution is real. Seriously.

wow, over the top optimism from Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news...defeat-trump-future-republican-party-trumpism

Crushing defeat? An insane, bigoted, homophobic child molester got 48% of the vote. 48%! This clowns should not have gotten more than 4% from a few wackos. He got nearly half. Sorry if I'm not convinced "voters are rejecting Trumpism".

Trump won the state by 29 points while acting insane and bigoted at a minimum. There was a 31 point swing, that's insane. It also tracks well with large swings in other special elections throughout the country.

Sometimes you just have to enjoy a good result.

I encourage a cautious optimism over this election result.

While there are many messages that can be gleamed, and one I would take is no election is impossible - even in the reddest state, 2018 and 2020 will not be reflected by the circumstances in Alabama in 2017. Especially in Alabama, Doug Jones has limited time to make a positive impact before Republicans have a chance to nominate a more likable candidate. It should be expected the state returns to its red meat origins ASAP.

At least the silver lining is this hinders Senate Republicans and President Trump through two upcoming elections. They will not regain that Senate seat until President Trump faces the voters again. We live in interesting times. And in fitting with that Chinese curse, I would say Alabama was one correct step in a swamp of missteps. The journey we are on is never over. We still need to look towards hard fought contests in the future.

So a man pursuing high school girls is enough to turn an election. But just barely. The economy is our real battleground, a field on which near all Americans, their teenage daughters included, are preyed upon by Wall Street vultures and harmed in many ways. Our fellow Americans need a campaign to help them see this truth, to understand its root cause, and to ward against blaming each other for the pickle we find ourselves in. There's over $15 trillion annually floating around in America, that's enough to make every single family worth million(s).

It's not joe the plumber or jose the cook's fault that your labors have stiffed you. The economy has devalued your labor on the natural course of its own evolution. It's time our policy evolved with it, and kept up with adaptations necessary to ensure the safety and security of our nation, and our people. We don't need all the money out there, or even a majority of it. But we do need enough to survive on. The American people had a greater share before, it's time they shake Wall Street and claim more of it again.

My vision of a strong Democratic Party is one that speaks to the 99% with policy that helps all of them.
Caution yes but when does a trend become a trend? Look at every race since trump? During his election races were far closer in places historically are not competitive and then every election after that has shown GOP strongholds shrinking. Yes one race doesn't mean anything but there is a trend over the last year of an energized and pissed off Democratic base, smarter selected Democratic candidates, and questionable gop candidates who run shaky campaigns often due to uncertainty regarding where to attach themselves to Trump or not.

Preassure is on Jones now, to show Alabamians that they made a right choice, pave way for more blue in the future.

Perhaps those women measured their dislike of both candidates and decided that pedo Roy stank just a bit less than his opponent. The other side of that coin is that Jones just barley beat a raciest pedophile.
My guess is that it's simply that most people cling to thought process they were raised in.

Not gonna happen. Moore lost because Moore is one of the most repugnant candidates to ever run for anything. Jones didn't win, he just had the good fortune to run against someone that would make Pol Pot look warm and cuddly. As soon as Jones is up against anyone that doesn't molest kids he's toast.

The fact that Moore got 49% of the vote is proof positive that Alabamians are too stupid to learn anything.

WTF white women.

Guy attacks, belittles, tries to rape teens.. and 2/3s of WW still vote for him.

This is why we haven't had a female president yet. Men would never take 1/10th that sort of shit and still vote for a woman.

Demand better, get better.

I don't quite get your point, as white _men_ were even more likely to vote for the guy. Shouldn't they be first in line for the reproaches (followed by the white women)?

Empathy. Identification. Supposedly shared risk. It comes down to the . . . alleged . . . discrepancy between how many underaged males Roy Moore reached out (and under) to versus the number of females he lavished his attention on

Yeah, but I'd never put much stock in 'identification' like that anyway. Being a woman probably just wasn't the important identity for them when voting (seems fairly likely that 'being white' was a big part of one though, though). Edit - in fact it seems as if maybe it was to a small degree, hence they were less likely to vote for him than their menfolk.

Though there is always the dodgy joke about 'what do men and women have in common?' 'they both hate women'...but I honestly don't actually think that's the issue here, I just mention it because it seems relevant to the OP's take.

It's Alabama

= college educated Moore supporter

Keep in mind that Trump is "college educated" with a bachelors degree in economics.
FYI: Trump doesn't know anything about economics.

Roy Moore was known to say the same four words after every date. “Don’t tell your Mom.”
