I lived in a town in Kentucky that had a straight pipe problem. It was the older Victorian houses (read really rich people) that were the perps. They didn't want their fancy yards dug up to connect to the municipal sewer system. Thee town was also in a karst terrain so everything, solids included, that went down the toilet made it to the aquifer.

I get that it’s a tough area for traditional septic systems but come on the solution can’t be this. Do what MA does, require septic systems to pass inspection when the property sells, offer low interest loans to people to add proper septic.
Maintain the sewer system that is in place.
Simple stuff.

No one can say for sure how many people have been sickened by the sewage in the soil, likely because the problem stretches back for years and partly because there is no hospital in the entire county.

That's an interesting, sparsely populated, center of poverty.

My city 65 miles north of them has more people than their entire county.

Yeah that sounds like Alabama to me. Not quite as shitty as Mississippi or Louisiana, but damn it's close.

So the typical contempt for long term planning and the environment from the hillbillies is making the hook worm great again? Way to go idiots, don't forget to get indignant about your own stupidity and blame Obama or liberals for it. I feel sorry for the kids involved, but to their voting parents I say tough shit. I'm sure their entrenched republican legislature has made drugs like albendazole perfectly cheap and available. *cough* Funny they wouldn't take this more seriously, what with the outrage over the 'lazy Southerner' stereotype, that being caused by rampant hook worm infections throughout the South.

One more reason to avoid that state, throw it on the pile.

I think Neal Young nailed it, quite a while back.

to be fair...Neil Young has repeatedly recanted those lines in his song, as great as that song is, and he and LS buried the hatchet long ago. His is actually the more dry, stereotyped, cliched narrative, whereas LS is far more nuanced, more inventive, and just clever.

Many don't seem to realize that Sweet Home Alabama is a satire of Alabama and Southern racism, and the line about Governor Wallace is a rebuke of ignorant southern pride keeping the people stuck in their own self-hating past, by voting against their own best interests. (If you disagree with the band's own explanation of this song, then you are almost certainly a racist bigot. just saying?) Young and LS get along pretty well, actually.

...or something.

ya, it's always a bit murky, primarily because Ronnie Van Zant died before he, the actual writer, officially weighed in publicly, but all the parties came to terms on their own. There also does seem to be shaded bit of disagreement between the other band members and Ronnie about the band's "mission," but in the end, Young still acquiesced to being too damn flippant in his lyrics. Regardless, Lynyrd Skynyrd claims to be huge fans of Neil Young, and vice versa. I think all of the journal writing goes with "what the band says now--but we aren't going to definitively claim __x__ because that dude is dead, and stuff," which is how that reads, heh.

The most interesting thing to me is how the writer fits the whole affair into an established musical tradition. Some fascinating bits of modern musical history. Loved the bit about "Hippie from Olema". The Youngbloods were great!
