Alaska Vacation, Kenai Peninsula Sterling area suggestions...

Wife and I are flying into Anchorage this weekend. Going to drive to the sterling area where we've rented a cabin and are going to stay for 6 days. Anybody familiar with the area and have recommendations? We are outdoors people. Things planned already, white water rafting six mile (slightly worried about the intensity of this). Renting some mountain bikes in the hope area. Take a trip to Seward and going on a day cruise. Not totally familiar with hiking options in the kenai fjords national park, but we definitely wanted to do some of that. Perhaps see some glaciers either by hiking or kayaking. Maybe take a day and drive down toward homer. Not sure what to do there, but we've heard it's a nice area.


Any suggestions?

We did the Seward Kenai fjords cruise and enjoyed that. Nothing to add beyond that. We were only in the area a weekend.

Another question, in case anyone knows. Looking at rental cars. I was gonna go with an economy car to save on gas mileage, but I'm unfamiliar with the roads. Traveling throughout the kenai peninsula, is it necessary to have an SUV or vehicle that can handle rougher terrain, or should a mid-size or compact car suffice?

We went to Fairbanks a few years ago with a stop in Anchorage. Such a great state.

As for rental cars,they will tell you when you pick it up that you are not to go on any unpaved roads and due to GPS will know (I'm not sure that part is actually true). I would say go for economy. We had a blast just driving around and exploring.

Also always fill up, once you start driving out of the main areas, you are looking at 3 or more hours between places to fill up. (may not be an issue in your area now that I think about it).

Watch for the giant deers too (Moose ). We had one run out in front of us the first night there -- granted you may not get that so far south.
