where do I find Alebrto's? In my experience, the mexican food in the Bay Area is quite lousy compared to what I hear exists in SoCal.

Chicago Mexican food is way better than what we get up here. ...Then again, it is the largest Mexican population outside of Mexico. :hmm:

Ever try La Taqueria in SF? Probably some of the best you'll find in the area.. though I'm more partial to Taqueria La Costa out in the Central Valley.. but then its not the Bay Area anymore!

I live in Hawaii and have been missing out on Alberto's awesome burritos for 25 years. That's a few friends that are from San Diego as well and sometimes we sit around and rant and rave and crave about Alberto's carne asada

Meat is under-cooked, otherwise looks okay; passable by Tucson standards. Tortilla looks suspect. They didn't wreck it by using vegetable shortening, did they?

Carne Asada is awesome. Nicely marinated & charred "cheap" cuts of steak cooked to perfection

As much as I love delicious beef however, Spicy Al Pastor is what I feel is closest to the pinnacle of flavor.

But yes Bay Area Mexican food sucks like really sucks. I moved here from the LA area to the East Bay up here a year and a half ago. I've tried so many places with very high ratings on Yelp but they range from very bad to just ok. I tried a place in the famed mission district in SF and it was still just ok. I think it was El Farolito. Plus since it's the bay area the bad Mexican food is so much more damn expensive. Go to a food truck and tacos are around three to five freaking dollars each. It's sad that the best taco I've had in the bay area is from a Filipino food truck but it wasn't Senor Sisig, it was a smaller Filipino food truck.

Carrillo's Tortilleria in San Fernando, CA. is around the corner from my uncles house. When I was a kid a visit to one meant a visit to the other. There was also an authentic Mexican bakery two blocks the other direction. I introduced my wife to both and that's where we ate anytime we got to that part of town.

In my hometown, Santa Clarita, there was the rustic El Mas Cafe, now known as David's Cafe, that had mighty good Mexican eats and the mariachi music was always blaring on the jukebox. Just North in Castaic there were always a few good taco trucks parked by the truck stop.

When I moved to the Napa/San Francisco Bay area it got harder to find good Mexican food but we found a few good spots including a mom and pop place where grandma did most of the cooking. She put a lot of love into her food and if she hadn't been 3x my age I might have left my wife for her.

Now I live in North Idaho and the small town I live in is lucky to have one authentic Mexican food joint owned by a Mexican family. When I found them I was like "my people!" and was thrilled to hear a little Spanish from the kitchen. An hour south of me an Atilanos Mexican Food opened that I hit up when down that way.

This necro is totally justified and I think I'm gonna go get me some carne asada.

I double checked, one of ours is Alberta's, the other is Alberto's. I know about the thing with the names, there is one called Adalberto's in Santa Ana.
