I never noticed this before, but when running Alc 52% freeware Edition, it has an image making wizard, so you can make your own images. Looks like the main difference now between the one you buy and the freeware one is the ability to burn them to CD / DVD and more virtual drives.

That's how my cousin watches the Netflix he returns before he's had a chance to see them. Probably a violation of the DMCA, but he deletes the images after he watches them. I don't know why he just doesn't use vobcopy. What I really don't know is why he bothers watching Hollywood movies in the first place.

There is a bit of a learning curve for Linux, but its scary powerful, oh yah, and free. But a word of warning, unlike the culture of piracy that seems to pervade the Windows world, after using open source software for a few years the idea of stealing someone's IP becomes almost physically repulsive for most people.

It's funny that you say that right after saying he rips DVDs. That's like saying I pirate programs, but I close them when I'm done using them. I don't think it has anything to do with the culture of linux and/or Windows.

I do agree that most movies out of Hollywood suck these days though.
Sorry, but I've got to get in the middle of this...
If he has paid the NetFlix fees and has not yet had the opportunity to view his (paid for) selection, is it really piracy to view them within his own time-frame?
"I think not," he said in answer to his own rhetorical question.
My $.02 worth (or less).

I doubt that anyone really questions what piracy is in these forums. We all know when we step over the line.
If I burn a CD to use in my car from an original that I own, it is not piracy, although some (read this as RIAA) might say otherwise.
Likewise, I personally feel no conscience when finding a version of a record I?ve worn-out and download it for the sake of preservation.

Edited: Whoever said that, "Alcohol was bad for you"?

what's the difference with alcohol 120%?

Approximately 68%

LOL

This is a good deal

To finally answer this question, Alcohol 52% (freeware edition) only offers 6 virtual drivers, where alcohol 120% and paid versions of alcohol 52% offer about 31 drives. Alcohol 52% also lacks the ability to burn the proprietary image files that it creates (the .mds) or any burning ability for that matter.

Also, the people saying this uses no resources, it runs a service (starwindservice.exe i believe) which takes up about ~1-2mb of ram. I forgot exactly what DT does, but both programs apparently use up ram.

I do have to say tho, the interface on A52% is much much nicer than DT. I think I will be switching to this product.

Also, if you guys want a nonbeta version of the SPTD that is newer than the current one shipping in Alcohol 52%, here is the nonbeta V1.43:

http://www.duplexsecure.com/en/downloads

Just uninstall your old and install the new and you should now be running the latest nonbeta SPTD for your Alcohol 52% installation. Also, the image creation wizard in Alcohol 52% freeware works great, just tried it with a SecuROM 7 title. The image was created flawlessly and it was mounted and ran great with no problems!

How exactly are you uninstalling your old SPTD? There is no uninstall option for it (in Vista at least). Either either Uninstall Alcohol or nothing.

Also, it's worth mentioning that Alcohol doesn't add uninstall information into the registry.

edit Nevermind - the SPTD installer was just being uncooperative with Vista. All is well now.

>"Alc has a better UI IMO, one can also mount images via right clicking on the image"

Just FYI, Daemon Tools has a free add-on called awxDTools that also lets you mount via right-clicking on the ISO, CUE, or MDS file. Right Click on the drive to unmount. Has worked flawlessly for me for a couple of years now, for playing games, shrinking DVDs, etc.

120% does perfect CD/DVD rips and can often include the security features, though I have not used it lately to verifiy this; but it did work well in the older versions with older security methods. 120% also burns discs too.

Magic Disc does.

Thanks for the reply - I ended up using Alcohol 52% and compressing the foldre I keep the images in. Most CDs don't compress very well, anyways, so having the feature built-in would help so much. MagicISO looks pretty powerful, though.

I use both Daemon and Magic Disc with zero trouble. In the past I have used the Nero and Alcohol Emulators at the same time with zero trouble.

If you use the UIF format for your disc images, it will compress the image and automatically play them back.

What's an UIF Image

You are here: Tutorials > What's an UIF Image?

Universal Image Format(UIF) is a powerful compression image file format for backuping CD/DVD. It is fast, reliable, and has rich set of features which include password-protected, data encryption, MD5 checksum support and much more. UIF can not only contain the complete data of CD/DVD just like ISO image, But UIF also supports backuping multi-session CD/DVD, Audio-CD, VCD, SVCD and DVD-Video.

What is the advantage to use UIF instead of ISO Image, zip, rar and other CD/DVD image to backup CD/DVD? The first and important advantage of using UIF is that can reduce the size of image file, it saves both in the compression and in the saving of disk sector cluster, UIF is a compressed format, It compresses raw CD/DVD data with high quality compression-method. Second, You can backup secret and private CD/DVD using UIF. Especially, It has the advantage to transfer CD/DVD through the Internet. UIF provides both the feature of password-protected for denying the access from any unauthorized user and other feature of data encryption for defeating any sniffer and hacker. Easy and Express to use UIF without restoring and extracting. Unlike ZIP,RAR and other compression archive, you don't have to extract files and folders from UIF before you need to use this files or folders. Just use virtual CD/VD software like MagicDisc to mount UIF image as virtual CD so that you can access all files and folders in UIF image through this virtual CD just like accessing your the original CD/DVD.

Does it have counter measures for StarForce, SecuROM, and SafeDisc like Daemon Tools and Alcohol 52% / 120%?

I am not certain about this, but I assume Magic Disc does it automatically. I have both Daemon and Magic Disc installed on my PC.
