My experience with Medion and other Aldi brands has always been good and a few days ago the clerk who works at our local store told me they were great about warranties.

Having said that, if you search for Medion on ebay you usually find quite a few Medion laptops being sold as parts or at pretty low prices. I do not know if that is a good indicator of quality or not.

Honestly you would be better of with this:
Dell Inspirion 1300 for under $600

While two years ago Medion had a couple cool deal I think the price point is now so close with big retailers that I'd rather go with some 800 number I will reach (even if it is India).

That Medion doesn't look too bad a deal. Here are some quick comparisons:

Dell:
$570 plus tax/shipping
1.7GHz Pentium M
1GB RAM - WIN
60GB 5400RPM HDD
Intel GMA900 video
CDRW/DVD
15.4" screen - WIN
1 year mail-in warranty
6.7 pounds
4 cell 29 WHr battery

Medion:
$600 plus tax - WIN?
2GHz Turion - WIN
512MB RAM
80GB HDD - WIN? (what RPM?)
Geforce6100 IGP - WIN
DVDRW - WIN
14.1" screen
2 year warranty - WIN
5.3 pounds - WIN
battery?

Zap's thoughts:
Medion is overall better deal because RAM is easy to add. Don't know about warranty details but double the duration. CPU and graphics are both better. Small screen is offset by the light weight. Unknown Medion battery, but the Dell battery is known to be extremely weak because Dell makes lots of money on people paying for upgraded battery options. Bigger HDD but unknown speed. DVD burner in Medion is a $35 upgrade in Dell. If buyer must have larger screen, get the Dell. Otherwise, get the Medion and toss in another stick of RAM. If lower weight is important then get the Medion. This past Thursday I carried my Dell Inspiron 6000 (similar size/weight to the 1300) with me around campus ALL DAY, and I have to say that I don't plan on doing it again because it was a major PITA. Those extra pounds make a difference.

Wonder if they're going to have a desktop again this year at Thanksgiving?

Yeah - those germans always come out with a better deal because it is engineered right and they back it up (2yr warranty)

They have special purchases of techie stuff several times a year - you just have to deep an eye on their Special Purchases page. I get their flyers in our Saturday papers, so I'm usually aware of them anyway. They usually have a nice desktop system sometime around Thanksgiving with a bunch of other tech stuff. They also have a snow blower and a lawnmower at the beginning of the seasons - usually pretty well speced and low priced.

But what number they get in is it, so you have to be ready Freddy if you want 'em. And no Credit Cards - Major Debit card or cash only.

I do not know about reaching computer support, but I can say that it is (unless it has changed) very easy and fast to reach Aldi customer service, and the person answering seems not to be located in India.

BTW, it is fun to review what Aldi will have for the 2nd week, not current, by checking their website. Week after next they have a Sansui 27" digital TV for $199,9? I have purchased two Sansui's from them, one a 32" and one a 27". Pic was good on both but now having problems with the 32" and warranty is 90 days labor 1 year parts. Now to find someone who will fix it.

They are OEMed to spec either in Taiwan or the PRC. Not sure which of the OEMs is the source but Medion doesn't do junk as they usually offer generous support terms.

I changed my mind on customer service after yesterday's events. I need service on a 32" TV from Aldi and it is in parts only warranty now. Called and they told me to find a shop that would work on it and they would provide parts. Called everyone within many miles and no one will touch it so called back. They said they would find someone and call me back. Have not heard from them and that was yesterday morning. So, if buying electronics, stick to things that can be shipped back inexpensively if need be or return it before the 90 day store return expires.

How'd you see the specials two weeks out? I can only see through Nov 5.

I'll be near the Alsi's in Chicago in two weeks and that Sansui might look good back at home!!!

I can only see for two weeks, current and following. But, I always check after midnight Sat when both weeks are shown.

I agree the Sansui looks good, but read my post above re getting it serviced, especially after the 90 days runs out. First check to find the repair centers to see if you are near any. They are listed under Orion's site. Also, it would be better if it was flat screen which I do not think it is.
