Way back in the dark ages I bought the $799 NetVista from this three year old archived thread. About six months ago I began having occasional stability problems in XP but I only use the machine for email and browsing so it didn't bother me. Eventually, about two months ago the thing wouldn't even boot all the way into Windows. I threw it in the corner and forgot about it--replacing it with the $200 Dimension 2400 deal from November.
Today I finally got around to calling IBM for service. The guy asked me to open 'er up and have a look at the motherboard, and lo and behold there were about 6 capacitors oozing brown electrolytic goo--something I'd heard about but never actually seen. Fortunately, these have a 3 year parts warranty so I'm getting a new motherboard sent free of charge.
Just thought I'd put a note up here to say that if anyone still has theirs and uses it, it might be worthwhile to check your motherboard.
