alert! previous shutdown due to thermal event

i got a dell gx270. i had to repalce the mobo about 6 months ago because the chip on the board (the one without the heatsink) got really hot and seemed to bubble. now laster it wont turn on, it goes to the dell logo, loads and freezes, shutting itself off. about the third attempt at boot it'll go to a screen saying attempt at boot failed at [pnp7]. if the hard drive isnt plugged in ill get [hdsk]. i thought i needed a new cmos battery, nope. once i realized that same onboard chip heated up and was buring hot at one point that i touched it, but it seems to always be cool now and it doesnt look to be heat damaged as the previosu motherboard.

all help and info is appreciated.

Windows I assume?

Try going in to the BIOS (F1 or DEL usually) then just disabling IRQ 7 I guess. I don't know...

after rebooting like 10 times, it no longer shuts down prematurely. around the 5th-10th time, if it beeps twice on start up it will instantly face me with that [pnp7] message. after 10 i will mostly always get the dell screen, aftwerwards two beeps and "Alert! previous boot attempt failed due to thermal event. press f1 to continue, f2 to enter setup." f1 will shut down the pc. f2 leeds me to the bios which is locked for the most part and basically useless.

the processor seems to get pretty heated, so does the onboard chip(heatsinked) the other chip remains cool. im going to try and get new thermal gel, the stuff on there is not moist and is like caked rubber.

Have you checked your motherboard for bulging capacitors or called Dell? I've had a number of Optiplex GX270 with problems that were more or less caused by bad capacitors. The issue with the Optiplex GX270 and bad capacitor is pretty well known.

why do you come on a forum made up of people who build their own and demand help on a pre-built Dell??

Call up DELL and demand help from them
If you bought it on ebay - call the guy you bought it from and demand help or your
money back.

er.. where and how it was built should be of no concern, computers still work the same.

and i did buy it on ebay, i have no other alternative.

ewu: what do you mean bulging capacitors? are they the small black cylinders?

Yes, the small black cylinders or look at Ribbon13's link. Normally it should be flat on the top and not pointy or looking like something has come out of it. I would save yourself the hassle and just call Dell, that's why you have a warranty so use it. Assuming of course, you had the warranty transferred to you when you bought the system. Otherwise, the only place you're likely to find a better response is at the dell forums.
