Sipping on my coffee this morning and while casually "window shopping" I noticed that over on Newegg and one or two other places prices on "entry level" and "mid-range" cards such as Gtx 750, Gtx 750 Ti, and Gtx 950 are suddenly waaaaaaay up. As in literally "overnight".

Gtx 750 going for $160ish. Gtx 750 Ti going for $190ish, Gtx 950 going for $220ish Prices literally up ~50% overnight with no warning

I am assuming it is some re-seller/scalper trying to "take advantage" of or "cash in" on the upcoming Christmas weekend.

Anyways, be careful with any last minute holiday shopping, because the price-hikers seem to be out in full force all of a sudden. Google is your friend for avoiding these guys.

Yeah probably resellers hoping to take advantage of shoppers in a hurry or who might not know any better. The bottom of the ocean, chained to a rock, is where these people belong.

This past summer around July, my little brother told me he was in the market for a new laptop - preferrably one that can do light gaming like Robocraft. He told me he had found "a really good one" on Newegg for $699. I asked him for the specs and I was like "huh??"

I wrote down the specs on a piece of paper, went home and Googled it myself, and sure enough one of these re-seller/scalper scammer guys had "bought out" all the inventory and re-stocked them at a hugely marked up price. I quickly discovered that Newegg regularly sold the same laptop for $470 or so, it was just "out of stock". I instructed my little brother to simply wait a week or two.

Sure enough, the laptop came back in stock around 11 days later for the "normal" price of $470, I told my little bro to "buy now!" and he did. He's a happy customer.

Had I not intervened he would have unnecessarily been out about $250.

Last I checked, the same laptop is still being sold by the same re-seller/scammer for a ridiculous price of $899.95 .......

This.

Casual types/non-techies (most of the population) who don't know any better will most likely fall for the scam, because they are not familiar with tech and pricing. I guess "a fool and his money are soon parted".

Tech-savvy types will see through the ruse however. $160-$170 for a puny Gtx 750 non Ti?? GTFO.....

GTX950 is 140-150$ on Newegg.com. GTX750TI can be had for as low as 95$.

Sure you didn't mix newegg.com and newegg.ca?

Many websites, including newegg and amazon, automatically adjust their prices for a particular thing based on sales volume and availability. This can drive prices up a LOT if something is popular and close to being sold out.

Third party sellers with LOL-it-only-takes-one-sucker pricing are also a problem.

Something fishy is going on over there, just typed in "Newegg.com" and then when I click on any menu item, it automatically redirects me to "Newegg.ca".

Buyer beware.

Yeah it sucks. I have been screwed before, but not by an individual, it was by Best Buy. I needed a cable. I forget what kind. Either HDMI or USB or something, but they were charging like 4 or 5x the online prices. I just didn't know, so I bought the damn thing. After looking online I was like, "NEVER AGAIN!" Couldn't believe it.

Good catch. My EVGA 970 shipped from Newegg is $460! AR.

That's a bargain. Next Xmas it'll be $700, same appreciation as the famous 'undervalued' 7800GTX 512MB. All that's needed to complement this awesomeness is a $500 i7 6700K - hurry, only 10 left!

Good catch. That's exactly what's happening. I typed GTX950 and GTX970 in Newegg.com and after the search results I get Canadian prices (Newegg.ca). It's a website glitch but now you guys know how Canadians feel about $470 GTX970s and $870 GTX980Ti/Fury X. ha!

Sometimes this happens before a site-wide promo code goes into effect, but I haven't heard anything like that for Newegg yet.

It did sound awfully like Canadian prices and it was so

Terrible error on newegg.com, I see what you mean. It just suddenly redirects you to .ca.

Canadian prices? LOL! Wow ok, so what us muricans thought was outright robbery and fraud was, in reality, business as usual for a Canadian kid trying to buy a gaming card. Damn. Blessings just been counted. Lucky stars been identified, named, and emblazoned.

The funny thing is that many of the prices are within $30 of the exchange rate.

Ya but once you add Canadian taxes and the fact that someone in the US makes a similar OR higher salary for a similar job but gets paid in US dollars, the Canadians are effectively paying 40-50% more. For example, if a police officer makes $80K CDN then in US a police officer with similar experience and overtime is also making $80K USD. Of course there are other major country differences such as mortgage interest in the US is tax deductible but Canadians pay very minimal annual premiums for health care, etc. Conversely, in Canada we have Tax Free Savings Account which allows us to invest our money into stocks, bonds, and pay 0 tax on all capital gains, dividend income but in the US there is no such option unless it's locked into a Roth IRA account which only lets you withdraw the funds with a tax penalty and at an older age. But anyway, if you are making a salary of $XX k CDN and someone makes $XX k USD, Canadians are paying 40-50% more as far as their purchasing power is concerned.

You act like you dont get anything back from taxes...

For me personally, it's not worth it. I visit the doctor once every 2-3 years. When I work abroad, I just purchase medical insurance. I pay for university degree not the CDN government. For me personally, living in the US or abroad would be better at this time. When I am over 65, it might make sense to live in Canada. When I worked in Dubai, I missed nothing that Canadian taxes pay for, so..? Then when looking at the average salary vs. the cost of real estate in a city like Toronto, your 6 figure CDN salary makes you broke when a crappy old house is $1M CDN.

.... I was gonna say the same thing. They get free healthcare for example

Anyways, getting back on topic, I was unaware tech prices were so high in Canada

Strangely, medicine/pills are super super expensive in the states, but still affordable in Canada, go figure.....

The prices are due to the extremely weak CAD. December have been yet another Canadian nightmare.

Pick 1 year view if its not on.

Medicine/pills are also super cheap here.

The strange part about this newegg error is that even some GPUs that show up under Newegg.com have Canadian prices assigned to them.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...tm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=afc-Skimlinks

Interesting, maybe it's some hackers "preying" on the upcoming Christmas weekend online shoppers. The "timing" of this strangeness seems to be no coincidence with Christmas "right around the corner".

In any case, if any lurkers are following this discussion, please please be careful with the online Christmas shopping and make sure your anti-virus is turned on...... something strange/fishy is afoot

Yeah, I've been having that problem all day. Be on newegg.com, click on product link, suddenly product page is on newegg.ca, in Canadian dollars. Not quite sure what's up with their site, or why it thinks my IP address is suddenly in .ca .
