Having done scientific research one thing I know is that a scientist who predicts that something MUST happen because he has a big sample is going to get thrown out on his ear. There are crackpots in every field though, and some who should know use something called the Drake equation. It's a set of variables that when combined tell us how many intelligent civilizations there are. The problem is that no one knows the variables nor has any good reason to pick a value except for "this sounds good".
Here is how it works. Let's say you have ten boxes. How much money is in them? What if you have a hundred? A trillion? Now how much more money is in the trillion boxes than the ten?
