I have been an avid reader of catid=40 for the last 5 years, never missing a day to
stick-it-to-the-man by taking advantage of hot deals, and I believe that you will all
appreciate this. I'm not using my normal account to post this because that is registered
to my work email address, and I don't want the company we're contracted for to be involved in this.

Sticker Price after configuring the specs we wanted $4,664.00.
We ordered it with Raid 0 60GB x 2, and they botched the order and left out
a drive, then shipped the second drive via ground (not overnight), after we received
the notebook and informed them of the error.

FedEx Ground Delivery $99.00 - 6 days to receive the notebook (2 weekend)

comp delivery - 4 days to receive the other hdd (received Friday 4pm)
put it in the system, and proceeded to format and set up the Raid Array.
We then realized they didn't send the raid drivers with the drive.
Downloaded them from Alienware's website, and well, they don't work.

This is the 4th time talking to somebody on alienware.com's support chat, and
yes, he did have access to all the transcripts from the previous 3, we confirmed
that on the phone after talking with the hour of level 1 tech support after they
finally bumped us up to tier 2.

Ignacio R.: Hi, my name is Ignacio R.. How may I help you?

STEVE: hey

STEVE: i need help installing promise fastrak 376 driver

Ignacio R.: Let me have your account number.

STEVE: ********@**********.com

Ignacio R.: ###### Refer to this number whenever you need to contact
tech support.

Ignacio R.: Do you need the nonRAID or RAID drivers?

STEVE: raid 0

STEVE: we have it on diskette right now but the setup seems to timeout,
and not recognize the A drive

Ignacio R.:
http://www.alienware.com/ftp_downloads/Mobile/7700/7700_RAID_1.00.1.37.zip

Ignacio R.: Did you try using the drive on all USB ports?

STEVE: Yes

Ignacio R.: Did you verify that the ports are enabled in the BIOS?

STEVE: The drive worked for the format of the array but when the files
transfer started the OS prompted for driver and then the floppy does not
function

Ignacio R.: Did you use it when it prompted you to press F6 while
booting the windows CD?

STEVE: Yes and it worked

Ignacio R.: Does it even get to the screen where it lets you format the
HD's?

STEVE: then the file transfer portion of the OS install started and the
floppy is not detected. The USB drive is still connected to the same
port

Ignacio R.: That's odd. Have you tried making another floppy with the
drivers to test it?

STEVE: Yes please refer to the previous statement where the Format of
the array is complete

Ignacio R.: Yeah

STEVE: Meaning the Hard drives

Ignacio R.: Did you test to see if it'll read another diskette?

STEVE: Ok. I will speak slowly for you;

STEVE: First

Ignacio R.: I know what you said.

STEVE: The driver on the disk works for the F6 driver load

Ignacio R.: I know

STEVE: Understand?

Ignacio R.: So did you test it with another diskette?

STEVE: Ok next after that

STEVE: the create partition and format process occurs aggreed?

Ignacio R.: So did you try to see if it'll detect another diskette?

STEVE: So iff the driver loads during the F6 / s portion why would the
floppy not work after that?

STEVE: The floppy drive does not even turn on

Ignacio R.: Maybe it's accessing another part of the disk

Ignacio R.: Would you like to answer my question?

STEVE: the floppy drive light doesnt power up

STEVE: I have used multiple disks

Ignacio R.: Have you tried a full reboot from each different USB port?

STEVE: Yes

Ignacio R.: Have you tried to also delete and rebuild the array?

STEVE: Yes

Ignacio R.: Were the USB ports working fine when you had windows
installed before?

STEVE: Did you not understand that in order for the format of the HD to
occur the floppy must have functioned?

Ignacio R.: I know. Why are you talking to me like I'm an idiot?

STEVE: Because you are asking idiotic questions

Ignacio R.: I have to ask questions to troubleshoot. If you don't want
to continue troubleshooting, I will disconnect.

STEVE: I have described the problem to you more than once it seems you
are not reading my answers

Ignacio R.: I have been.

Ignacio R.: You're not answering my questions though.

STEVE: The floppy and USB ports function until the file transfer portion
of the OS install starts

STEVE: Understand?

Ignacio R.: Right and when you had windows before you decided to install
it with RAID, were the USB ports working 100% of the time?

STEVE: It is brand new

Ignacio R.: So did you use it before you reformatted with RAID?

STEVE: You shipped it incorectly we are trying to fix it

STEVE: No

Ignacio R.: So we don't know if the USB ports were ever working 100%.

STEVE: They were working because the driver loaded

STEVE: Do you understand that the driver was loaded?

Ignacio R.: I'm not going to take this treatment from you.

STEVE: Do you understand that the floppy works until the OS portion
takes over?

Ignacio R.: Call this number if you want to speak to somebody else.

Ignacio R.: Technical Support can be reached at 1-866-287-6727, option
2.

Ignacio R. Has Disconnected

The notebook is still sitting on our desk unusable until the re-compiled windows
cd with Raid 0 drivers arrives from them. Most likely on Monday.

Still its good to see what kind of idiots work at places before we buy their products.

I blame the schools that pump these idiots out like pez candies. They all think they can go to school for a few months and come out making great money. Sad.

Thanks for the 'heads up' but I've never seen an alienware PC for sale in the 'hot deals' section so there is no point in putting it here. Post this in General where u have more traffic and it being in the right thread. PS: Ignacio shouldn't have done that.

Agreed HDTVman. Even at the level of higher education, everyone around here still thinks they are going to be rolling in dough.

I have had this happen multiple times on servers that don't come with a floppy drive. It's my opinion that it's a problem with the way Windows installs because I've always been able to get it to reognize the drivers on its first attempt using a USB floppy and then it needs them again (for whatever reason) but does not recognize the USB floppy drive.

So, I just create a slipstreamed OS cd with the raid drivers on it already to solve the problem.

In conclusion, I don't think there's a problem with your USB ports as I've experienced this behavior with Windows XP/2003 Server.

Eric

Edit: Which you already know.
