I have tried uninstalling the drivers, and then letting windows reinstall them, and nothing.

Nothing is showing up wrong anywhere, there just isn't any sound. I've played with the volume using the "Fn" key and volume in/decrease buttons; and I've played with the volume through control panel, but nothing is heard through the built in speakers nor external speakers. The only time I hear anything at all, is when I hit the power button and I'm using external speakers, I hear the little crackle that the surging power makes.

This is a notebook I'm talking about (not the system in my sig)

dxdiag
DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code) Because I didn't hear anything. I tried with full hardware acceleration, and with no HW(Emulation) but heard nothing.

DirectMusic test results: All tests were successful. (I didn't hear anything though)

It's an Alienware roughly a year old 2.8GHz 1.00GB RAM. I don't know what else I can say about the system. The sound used to work once upon a time, but it doesn't anymore.

I don't know where the hell my sister put the stuff pertinent to the system (Manuals etc. I hope this thing is still under some kind of warranty, but in the mean time, if there is a grand master who thinks they have a solution...)

Just to verify, in the control panel under sound, nothing is muted correct? Also, have you tried installing the drivers from the driver disk? When did the sound stop working?

Then I would say all tests were not successful... ;-)

I too was going to post, but fear I may be sub-par.

Just a tip -- don't put "guru's only" in a request for help. Only arrogant bastards will reply so you will be alienating yourself from some potential good support.

Thanks for the reply Daishan
Nothing is muted anywhere. I don't know when exactly the last time the sound was working, but I don't think anything special took place when the sound stopped. Last I heard from my sister was that it was working, then when I tried using the laptop, the sound just wasn't working anymore.

OOPS! Was going to post, but perhaps my credentials are insufficient to meet your criteria.

You meet the criteria if you have something constructive to say. You don't meet the criteria if you reply, and say nothing but troll.

That's what DirectMusic reports. I wouldn't call it a success either. But there was no need to point this out; hence the need for alienation.

You weren't affraid to post this, were you? Your entire post wasn't sub-par, it was a straight trolling flame. Where did your constructive criticism come in? Was it in mentioning the obvious? Or was it in flaunting your ignorance, and not knowing that I wasn't saying it was successful, but rather I was reporting DirectMusic's test result?

The reason I specify "guru's only" isn't to make anyone feel inadaquate. It is to keep people like you out; but it's impossible to do, I see that now.

Gurus know they are gurus and they are not always arrogant, nor do I condone it when they are; but it is a Guru's help I need.

Help, I need somebody,
Help, not just anybody,
Help, you know I need someone, help.

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down

Sounds like it may simply have a on/off mute switch. My laptop does.

Thanks for the reply, corkyg

I was hoping that would be the case, but the only buttons that deal with volume control, are the function (Fn) keys volume in/decrease buttons.

I've also looked in the BIOS for something, but nothing sound related is listed. It doesn't even give me the option to enable/disable the onboard sound.
