Warning to anyone considering ordering anything from Alienware. DON'T! They take the cake for being the worst online vendor that I have ever dealt with before! (And I've dealt with some pretty bad ones!) Here's my story that will be posted on resellerratings.com shortly (the resellerratings one is slightly different just cuz I didn't get a full cut/paste of the text before I posted it)-

---
Ordered a set of Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 speakers from Alienware on Monday 11/26/2001. Called them almost immediately to confirm my order as their web site states. Recieved an e-mail on Wednesday night stating that my billing address for my VISA credit card does not match the billing/shipping address that I gave them, was told to fax over my driver's license and sign a form which sortof makes me nervous in this day and age of identity theft. Called them up and told them that my billing address is in fact the same as what I gave them and told them to re-process. In the meantime, I called my credit card company and was told that the system they use (AVS) is sometimes very picky about addresses, so I matched my address to the one that I gave Alienware since they were not EXACTLY the same (abbreviations and such were mismatched). Was also told by the VISA CSR not to fax that form over because it sounds fishy and is not standard procedure for companies (usually they manually call the credit card company first, which would take care of this problem all together!). Called Alienware back to tell them that the problem should be taken care of and they can run it again and that if it did not go through asked if it I could be called immediately so I could resolve the problem by faxing over the requested document (which asks for my driver's license and has me sortof wary about doing that to begin with) or by some other means. The CSR promised he would relay the information and I would be called in the event that the charge did not go through. Thursday, I receive no phone calls at work that day so I assume that all is well (I cannot check my home e-mail from work due to a firewall). I call them from work just to make sure and speak with Claudia Diaz who had been sending me the e-amils about my address problem. She does not remember receiving any e-mails from the CSR and does not know that my card was to be recharged. She says that she will charge it immediately. To my dismay when I return home, I have the exact same e-mail regarding my address. I call Alienware again and ask what the problem is. I am told my zip code is not correct despite the fact that my zip code is exactly the same on Alienware and in my credit card company's system. I give them my American Express card instead and ask them to charge that card instead. I am told that the billing department has gone home for the day and my card will be charged on Friday morning. Friday morning, I call Alienware and ask them if they were able to charge my American Express card. The CSR does not have any idea what card I am talking about and only has my VISA card on file! He transfers me to accounting. Accounting tells me they don't know where my American Express credit card number went and transfers me to sales! Now that I have the run-around syndrome and am worried that some employee made off with my American Express number and is currently charging up a storm I start to feel like I should have ordered elsewhere. Finally after speaking to the CSR he finds out where my credit card information is stored (apparently somebody physically wrote it on my order rather than doing it electronically, because that way is faster...???). The CSR tells me he has no clue when my card will be charged but it will definitely be charged on Friday sometime. Additionally he tells me that the speakers wont ship out until Monday at the earliest if my charge goes through today, and that the speakers would only be held for me in the warehouse IF the charge goes through, in other words if the speakers go out of stock from this point in time until they finally figure out where my AMEX card went and when they finally feel like charging it... I wouldn't even get them shipped out on Monday!!! After telling him that I don't understand why it takes so long to charge my card, he tells me he will try to push it forward and get it charged quicker (a few nastier tones, but no foul language went into that discussion to get him to try to push it forward). I tell him to call me if there are any problems. Never receive any phone calls Friday. Call them Friday night and the CSR tells me he doesn't know if the card got charged or not but that it is awaiting processing. He says to call back Saturday morning and they will know whether the card got charged or not. Call on Saturday morning, the CSR tells me he doesn't know whether the card got charged or not, in fact, he doesnt even have my American Express card on file!!!! But that he will write down my credit card information again and make sure that it gets charged on Monday morning. I have had enough of this BS so I tell him to cancel my order and to MAKE sure that they cancel my order properly. I order from Klipsch.com directly and now feel like I've just wasted 5 days on shipping time for the speakers since I could have ordered them Tuesday from Klipsch.com (On Monday Klipsch.com didn't have them in stock). Now some of you may say that this is my fault for not having my address in the VISA system properly. But I have made multiple online orders using my VISA in the past few weeks and I have had NO problems what-so-ever using it. Even with other companies like newegg.com that use an address verification system similar to Alienware's I have never had a problem!
---
To make this story even better, they wanted to charge me the same $27.00 for Fed-Ex 3-day shipping (they have no cheaper/slower shipping option) that they would have even though it was now taking them over a WEEK to even ship the speakers to me!!!!

I also asked at one point if Alienware would call my credit card company on the phone to verify my address and the CSR told me that "Thats not the way it works." ... and basically refused to do this. I don't know why this is their policy, but it seems like a stupid one.

In any case, I will never be giving Alienware my business again, nor will I ever recommend Alienware to any of my friends or the companies that come to me for computer buying advice. Buyer beware if you're ever going to buy from Alienware! Their Customer Service reps are very nice, but they seem unable to assist me and were unwilling to call my credit card company to do a manual address verification (which I know they could do if they had to). Additionally I feel as though they lied to me consistently in regards to contacting me in the event that my card did not get charged properly. I would highly recommend not purchasing from them!!!

McPhreak,

Same here! I heard nothing but good things about them, thats why I didn't hesitate to order the Klipsch 5.1 from them when I found out they had it in stock. But if you goto resellerratings.com I saw they only have a 4.4/7.0 and lots of the comments reflect my own experience with their customer service people ... very friendly, but overall don't help you at all.

come on. give the guy a break. you would complain if the same thing happened to you. I guess the whole problem was maybe purchasing accesories from them rather than maybe buying the whole rig from them. Maybe the CS just doesn't know how to fill out accessory forms.

learned a lesson here?
don't buy accessories frrom a rig seller

i bought Grey back in '98. thing still runs like a beast. suffice to say, i build my own now.

i'm beginning to hate buying stuff on the net. you give them money (aside from S&H cost which goes to a 3rd person handler) and you dont walk away with crap except a form e-mail filled in with your name and the crap you ordered. then if shipping gets fooked, yer fooked trying to square it up with the deliverer. when it finally gets to your house and something is fooked up, you gotta deal with the company you ordered from....
buy from a store...you walk away with what you payed for. and....if its fooked when you get it home you can take it back and have it exchanged...
the internet is making us all lazy.

batgeek,

Well, I'm sure I wouldn't be posting this about Alienware if I never had to deal with customer service. I'm sure if you place an order with them and don't have any problems they're fine. But if you DO have a problem it seems like their customer service isn't the best to deal with. Check out Resellerratings.com and you'll see that I'm not the only one who has complained about their customer service. Thats what seems to separate a good company from a not-so-good company ... The good companies I have dealt with have a good customer service department, for example, when they say they will call you back ... They DO! My problem isnt that I never received my order, my biggest problem is that their customer service seemed unable to assist me and did not return my phone calls when they said they would.

Perhaps I'm stupid to order a component from a company that builds systems, but the issue here is dealing with their customer service, not what component I bought. I am almost positive if I bought a system from them that I would have experienced the same problems with their ordering system and my billing address. And I probably would have experienced the same run-around and clueless answers that the CSR's gave me.

And while I'm sure the majority of customers have no problems with Alienware because they never need to deal with customer service, I'll bet there is a good percentage of those who have dealt with their customer service reps and had problems. Just because you've never personally heard a complaint doesn't mean they don't exist. I had never heard any complaints about Alienware, rather I had only heard praise from them before I placed my order with them.

CS sucks everywhere cuz they goota deal with idiots like us....
customer is never satisfied. them CS ppl don't have an easy job. imagine all the ppl you have to talk to on one shift....
coulda been close to the end of his shift, coulda been a newbie CS dude, or like you said...crapola CS

but i really didn't think it was very nice to slam Alienware on this msg board the way you did. lotsa folks see this and i still believe they are a very reputable company an di'm gonna defend them. all the other "watch out for" threads i see here i take seriously. but those usually aren't from a company with the history of Alien

and i never said you were stupid

I've always heard good things about them. I've recommended them or falcon nw to people who wanted a computer. *a good performance one and I didnt wanna build them one* THey've had good experience too. I think it is because you didn't get a computer, or you're just unlucky. Sucks though, I know.

batgeek,

Well, its good to share experiences here. I'm just sharing mine. I'm not sure if you have ever had to deal with their Customer Service for a complaint, but if you haven't then like I said, I'm sure ordering from them goes very smoothly when you don't have a problem (like almost any other company).

I don't think all company's Customer Service departments suck though. I have dealt with companies that have great customer service and were able to take care of my problem promptly, or if they couldn't take care of it promptly, they called me back when they had a firm answer. Klipsch is a good example of great customer service. Newegg.com in my own personal experience has good customer service. Mwave.com as well. Thats not to say that there aren't any bad customer service reps at these companies, but in my experience these companies were able to resolve my problems in a timely fashion and return my phone calls.

Additionally, I don't blame one specific Alienware CSR in this situation, if it was just one person I talked to I could chalk it up to one bad apple. But I talked to roughly 6 different people at Alienware during my various calls to them (some of them twice or three times). I give them all credit for all being very nice, but not one of them was able to help me with my problem. I must also re-affirm that I never got nasty with any of the CSRs except for maybe the one where I commented that I got a nasty tone with (That was on Friday morning when the CSR told me he couldn't guarentee that I would have the product because it could go out of stock between now and the time my card would get charged on Friday afternoon). I never ever used foul language or raised my voice with the CSRs. I realize that CSRs have a tough job so I always try to be friendly. However, the fact that they didn't return my phone calls and were unable to resolve my problem or even try to work with me by calling my credit card company leads me to believe that their customer service is poor. It may not even be the CSR's fault themselves, it may just be Alienware's system of communication between customer service reps that makes them appear bad. Whereever the blame lies, it is still all within Alienware and leads to bad marks in my book.

In any case, I'm not trying to be nice to Alienware by slamming them. I'm trying to be nice to AnandTech users by sharing my experience with Alienware. I am sure if you had problems with another company you would want to share your experience so if a person is considering ordering from them they might think twice about it. I realize that you have no problems with Alienware and I understand that you like the company. But just because you like them, and just because you didn't have any problems doesn't automatically mean the company is great. ... Personally I don't know what "history" Alienware has other than your own history with them, but I have no history with them, and other than reviews of Alienware systems and hearing that they were a good company through the grapevine I have not heard anything about them. If you read their resellerratings.com comments you will see that I am not the only one with problems here. You don't need to take my post seriously if you don't want to, but I will assure you all of what my story states is factual, I did not lie or exaggerate anything. I am simply trying to help by sharing my experience.

Oh, and I know you didn't call me stupid ... but I thought maybe I was stupid for not knowing to order components from a system builder company. (Although I have never had any problems buying components from a company like Dell or Gateway which are both primarily system builders).

pay,

Well the price on the speakers was retail price which is what most other vendors are charging for these speakers.

I also realize that this company is primarily a system builder, but I did not think that they would have this many problems placing a simple order in which no building or anything is required. All they needed to do was ship it to my address in a box. No assembly required ... Again, I don't think Alienware normally has a problem when you dont have any problems. The problem with Alienware lies with when you need to talk to their Customer Service department. So if you want to buy from them and you don't think you'll ever need to talk to Customer Service, then go ahead ... but if you have problems and need to use their warranty, buyer beware. Read the resellerratings.com comments if you think that I'm the only one with problems here.
