I can't answer the warranty question, but Costco may have these for $149.99 new retail box (1 year warranty but who knows about Costco member satisfaction guarantee). Oh yeah, Costco's retail box comes with a SATA controller and IIRC one of those "special" SATA cables that work only with WD drives but supposedly are more secure.

The Secureconnect cable is the dumbest implementation of a cable that I have ever seen. It makes the cable less likely to fall off by clipping the datacable onto the SATA power connectors, in such a way that you CANNOT USE the SATA power connector.

IMO yes. AFAIK the drive retains the 5 year warranty and you can get USB boxes for $20 or Firewire for $30 (thereabouts, haven't shopped for them in a while). So yes it'll cost you $20-30 more than the stock unit, but you get 100GB more space and 4 years more warranty. My recommendation is to actually pay a tiny bit extra for one with a slimline 80mm fan underneath the drive. The reason is that I've seen drives fail from heat in external drive bays and those aluminum ones don't cool down the drive at all because the exterior aluminum doesn't even touch the HDD which is mounted on a plastic tray that slides into the aluminum. It turns into a little oven in there.

Mine came in today. Holy heaviest hard drive I've ever owned, Batman! Sucker weighs a TON. Formatted on my Mac, gives me 465.65 gigs free. Geez, there goes 35 gigs lol. It's fast and it's very quiet. I have it hooked up to my Intel Mac Mini via Firewire; it copied a 119 meg zip file over in 5 seconds flat (my internal drive is 7200rpm). Very nice! I'm using this Macally enclosure:

It's $43, it has USB 2.0 and Firewire, and it's ginormous. Really, the enclosure is nearly as big as my 5.25" enclosure. It's also fanless, so that may be part of the reason for the size. Comes with a vertical stand. Works great, nice blue light up front. Anti-skid strips on the top and bottom.

$223 for a 500gb external hard drive, w00t!
