i think the problematic ones were the 7200.11 series?

Thanks. It looks like the free drive is the 7200.12 series.

Can anyone comment on how silent the psu and case exhaust fan are?

Just a whoosh, whir, or lots of whine too?

Its fairly quiet, mainly you don't hear the fan except for the air. Its pretty low tone, so only when I turn off my main comp & all the external HDs do I actually hear the WHS. And my main PC is also pretty quiet (2x180mm/1x120)

Sorry for being off topic on this...

I have all the spare parts lying around (only need WHS or equivalent and additional HDD's). Are there any other advantages for me to buy this (other than (a) better looking (b) smaller footprint and (c) more energy efficient)?

In your situation, not really. If you already have most of the parts to build a WHS, this doesn't add anything much besides what you listed already (form factor, size, efficiency).

This is a great deal tho if you're starting from scratch. The OS license and 2TB drives are about $270-$300 by themselves. For the remaining $150 you're getting mobo/cpu/ram/case. The case is what stands out. Small form factor cases with 4 hot swappable drive bays aren't readily available (or cheap).

If you don't need the OS and/or drives, this isn't that great a deal.

This package is really a great deal. You get the OS. Small, dedicated package. Hotswappable drive bays. Energy efficient (although not big on power). 2TB HDs. For the money, I would definitely NOT want to build one myself.

As mentioned, the unit is fairly quiet. Hopefully it stays that way but looks like the small fan can be replaced if it acts up.

Yep, I am actually thinking of swapping the 120mm fan for a Scythe Kaze PWM. See if that'll help cooling, though both the 120mm fan and the 60mm? fan on the psu seems to be user replacable.

Well, I have two of these--buying them even after plopping down dough for 2 WHS licenses and putting together an earlier system from spare parts. What I like about the system is of course the size, the energy efficiency and the hot swappable drives. If you're starting from scratch, this is a hard system to beat with the added 1TB hdd. Putting together anything yourself using comparable parts is going to cost you about the same or sometimes more.

In terms of sound, it's pretty damn quiet, I can hardly hear it as said by others, unless I turn off my main PC and other things in the room. Also there is a nice feature to dim the lights so if you keep this in your bedroom, you don't have to see pulsating blue lights while sleeping or when you turn off the lights. My only caveat would be if you're the type to use your WHS as a PVR or Media Center, then you would want a larger system to add expansion and thus you might want to build your own.

My only complaint with this purchase and I don't know if this affected others was my credit card charged me an $8.66 foreign exchange fee. I know NCIX is Canadian, but I though by buying via NCIXUS that it would be charged through its US division or something.

I'm not sure if this really qualifies as a hot deal.

At the moment the price is $445 (until 8/11) and:

Get a FREE GIFT when you buy this product (web orders only)!
1. Western Digital WD1001FALS Caviar Black 1TB SATA2 7200RPM 4.2MS 32MB 3.5IN Dual Proc Hard Drive OEM (a $130 value!)

That's not GREEN, that's BLACK. Don't know that I'd call this "hot" just now. I may go with an MSI Wind system, either Atom or dual core Atom, not sure.

Has anyone measured the power usage of this? In use vs. idle, etc.?

is there a reason why this unit maxes out at 4TB? Technically, we can stuff 4 2TB drives to make 8TB.

I believe it is, except they don't give you the bonus 1 tb hard drive.

On the other hand, I think Bing Cash Back for Tiger Direct is 12% now.

Yup 12.5%! So you can buy whatever harddrive you want, correct? $1.99 for shipping, and no tax for most people. I think it's a great deal.

What 1TB HD do they put in this?

How do you get the "Bing cashback" I'm a total noob about that.

Is the $20 discount when paying with Paypal automatic?

Is there any way to determine the power usage of the H340 with 1 1TB drive installed, both idle and not idle? I read a lot of reviews and haven't seen anybody specify this. OTH, the MSI Wind systems have gotten many comments concerning specific power usages.

That's the WD10EAVS model, otherwise known as the castrated (by me at least) WD-green drive.
