So does that flasher routine on the website referenced above actually change the ID string of the Dell card to an Orinoco Gold, or just update the firmware? A while ago, I found a routine that forced a firmware update but didn't change the ID string. (The Orinoco official flash updates are all firmware locked, so if the card IDs itself as a Dell TrueMobile, they won't work without hacking).

If it really changes the ID string, that's great, because from that point forward, you can just use the official Orinoco Gold support.

what is the difference btwn orinoco firmware and dell firmware.....? better reception? higher transfer? I am happy with my dl of 1.2 on my cable. but in this corner of the room it just would not work....... and if I point the card away from the router it will die as well.

orinoco firmware is MUCH newer. Dell has not bothered to take the orinoco firmware and update it in over a year or something absurd like that. Basically, the dell firmware is the orinoco firmware but dell just edits the binary so it will work on the dell card (which is exactly the same as the orinoco, except for the id string)

So someone else out there edited the newest orinoco firmware for dell cards (basically doing what dell should have done a long time ago)

I'll let you know tonight once I flash the card I suspect it still reads as a dell though...

I don't think the ID string was modified.

I flashed it and everything is updated to the latest orinoco gold firmware, drivers, and client manager. Here's a screenshot of the client manager:

I am using Win98SE.

I can't get it to it to recognize the card when i tried Orinco driver.
I am using the Dell drivers. When i tried to update it to patched firmware updater version 8.10 from http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,5878424
it would say card not found..

When i download Agere's driver and Proxim's, window wont take the drivers..

What should i do?

I did the upgrade from 1150 to orinoco on Win 2K pro, on a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600.

The drivers worked.

The Flash Firmware update worked.

However, the client manager does NOT work. I replace the Cmluc.dll with the win2K one.


I am getting error:

Error opening the control panel applet WNLUC48.CPL-8002.


Does anybody know what I am talking about?

Does anyone have a fix?

finally got around to installing this card - frigging amazing....i had an orinoco silver card that worked great, but with this thing i'm picking up 2 of my neighbor's wireless networks...both wide open of course

just flashed the firmware & installed the client software...worked great

I tried many of those drivers. even the hacked ones. But it always tell me "driver not found" when i try to update my drivers.

March 31, 2003- Microsoft enables new WPA wireless encrytion via software (WinXP). Here's the ironic part:

Microsoft, which along with Cisco Systems (Linksys) pushed for the adoption of WPA, doesn't yet support WPA in its Wi-Fi gear.

The OS has the new encryption, but it's useless since the hardware isn't using it. you have to have everything (OS, Access Point, and wireless card) all talking WPA to have the better encryption.

I got mine from last week and it works pretty well. For some reason I have too screw around with it to connect every time I turn on the PC but when I get it there, it works well. It has a constant 2ms ping time from my AP.
