Great card. Get them before gone, the company that ownes the Orinoco brand now has made a cheaper chipset that is not as good. At least in my experience.

These are perfect. Get yourself a Toshiba SG20 router and you have the _perfect_ firewall. SG20's can be had on eBay for $190.
I'm waiting for Lucent/Agere to put out an 802.11g Orinoco card...

I can't understand why people would want a 802.11g network...seems like overkill. Most people use their wireless networks for Internet access, which, at best goes up to 3000K of bandwidth (and if you're that high, you're REALLY lucky...most are 768K-1500K with a broadband connection). Most 802.11b networks give you around 6Mb (6000K) of throughput (with a max on 11, but nobody gets that high of throughput), so that's plenty. Unless you're in a situation where you have to copy large files back and forth (I'm talking like 20 megs or higher), I don't really see a point to higher speed wireless for what 99% of people use it for, which might be why companies other than Linksys are slow to introduce 802.11g gear. Right now 802.11b equipment is flying off the shelves, so unless somebody makes a reason for someone to need that much bandwidth (other than for bragging rights), I don't think g equipment is going to take off until it becomes the same price as b equipment. The fact that 22Mb wireless equipment essentially failed is a good indicator that people are not looking for faster wireless connections...they're rather have range and stability.

That said, the Orinoco cards are probably the best PCMCIA cards out there. The fact that they even have an external antenna adapter makes them even better. I managed to get on from HP for $39 sometime back when they were being cleared out (which was cool because the HP brands are true generic cards, so you can use the generic Orinoco drivers without any hacking).

Ya, you need to edit hex strings to fool the orinoco updater to update the dell... This has already been done and tested, it's just a matter of putting the latest tested files in one place with instructions... I will do it as soon as I get my card...

Nah, don't worry yet. It could take a couple of hours. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why some are quick and some are not.

Cool, glad it came.

Very good deal. I have 2 of these, I paid $75 for one, and $50 for another, so $39.20 is a steal! These have been considered by many to be the best 802.11b cards. The driver support for Linux is very mature as well, for those that swing that way and were curious.

Hey Rossman, good to see you... Yes, this deal is damn hot... I also plan to put up a very clear page with full links to all necessary files and explanations on how to update the drivers, firmware, and client manager to the latest orinoco ones...

lol, I remember you join the forums here a few months before me... But you've always done WAAAAAY more posting

Cheers...

Good to see you also although I have no clue who you are

That would be awesome if you could create a page with all the firmware updates, hacks, antenna's, WAP, everything you can think of ... if you can do that I would be more than happy to host it for FREE. I could either host it on my GottaDeal.com site or I can register a new domain (can you think of some good short catchy domain names which aren't already taken???).

As a new Truemobile 1150 owner, I would be willing to help someone make a webpage with firmware updates, tips, and whatever.

If anyone is interested PM or email me.

Thanks again for posting this hot deal

Also the home page of Orinoco Wireless has their own antenna that they make (but they run a hefty price and hefty size). Another cool things is to make one out of a Satellite Dish, but I'm not sure the range on those. I rather connect the antenna to the Access Point instead of a wireless card, because like BlipBlop stated...what is the point of having a wireless card if you have to lug around an antenna.

P.S. I apologize for sounding like a jerk. I get that way sometimes.
N/P we all get that way sometimes

satalite dish..10 miles :Q line of site (ie: 2 dishes pointed at each other) not freaking bad w/just a plain old wireless card for $40, a MC connector ($15) and a dish (free)

True for most casual users, as you say. I still have old Raytheon 2mbps wireless gear that can outpace my 1.5mbps cablemodem connection, but I also have every room of my house wired w/ CAT5 so for local network connectivity (like accessing my servers) I'm spoiled by 100mbit connections. That's why I'd be interested in 802.11g--to keep the high level of speed I'm used to while being able to ditch the patch cord.

Yeah, I'd love to see a site with all of the files/hacks/patches, etc. for this thing.
I nabbed one when the shipping wasn't free.
Oh well.

Isaiah is working on a PHP/HTML page which I'll either host on it's own domain (any ideas on domain names) or as part of my site.

Thanks! I picked up my 4th as a spare. Great range/security for the price.

I don't know why people buy other cards... Friends come to my house and have 1-2 signal bars. Sitting right next to them, my 1150 has 4-5.

P.S. I've never had a problem with Dell cust serv, but maybe I have been lucky. Cust serv is never perfect, so you need to set your expectations.

Their customer service sucks. I placed an order Sunday night and decided to cancel it monday morning @ 8am. I ended up purchasing a orinoco minipci card for my ibm x30.

I called up and they said it would be no problem. I then check Tuesday and the card was shipped Monday afternoon and one of my roommates signed for it since I wasnt expecting it until April 2 (as listed ontheir website). Now I have to go through the process of getting a return sticker and then getting it sent off.

I hope you did the smart thing and wrote down the name, badge number/extension, date and time of the person you spoke with???

yes, but they are shipping me a label to ship it back at no cost (and I get my shipping refunded) but that might be because they shipped it even after I called to cancel.

As for getting the badge number, etc from the guy I talked to about canceling, I really didnt think about it at the time. it didnt seem to be a problem so I didnt bother with any of that. I'm going to have to drop it off to be shipped, but i should be refunded my entire purchase including the $8 shipping. If not, then they will get a earful.

On a side note, how do returns work on Amex private payments?

Dell customer service is great! Just talked to Staci a few minutes ago and I will be refunded my $8.00 for shipping. By the way, I ordered this card on 3/21 and received it on 3/24.

Once the PHP/HTML is programmed, I'm ready to host it ... just waiting for someone to put together a simple "how to ..." page, if I had HTML skills I'd do it but I know zip, nada, zilch about HTML/PHP.
