In the midwest, Verizon is universally known as complete, utter *crap*.
Cingular is the killer app out here.

In the past I have have used just about every service. AT&T is the best for me right now. Still crappy but works the best.

This thread really should be locked, since there is no Hot Deal to be found in it.

That aside, I'd like to correct some info in drue's largely informative post.

Sprint PCS and Verizon *do* use different frequency bands. SprintPCS was built from the ground up on 1900 MHz PCS. Since they have PCS coverage in only the major metro areas, they partner with other carriers to provide service to their customers in Roaming Agreements. To this end, a SprintPCS phone can actually switch frequencies to 800 MHz (in the US) and borrow another network. On 800 MHz, the phone can be either CDMA digital, or old-school AMPS analog. Some phone models support all three modes ("Tri-Mode") while others are digital-only, and do not support 800 MHz AMPS. I don't think SprintPCS sells any true 1-band 1900 MHz phones, but they did have them during their rollout (QCP-1900 model). Obviously, Sprint would rather you use the 1900 MHz band, so the program the phone to prefer it, sometimes agressively.

Verizon is largely a conglomeration of older phone networks that date back to the 800 MHz Analog (AMPS) network. On AMPS, there were two carriers in each market (A & B, non-wireline, wireline). Verizon has upgraded almost all of the networks to be 800 MHz CDMA digital, so the same frequency can usually carry either kind of call. They very much discourage AMPS connections, of course, since it uses more effective bandwidth on the air.

Some Verizon phones can roam onto the 1900 MHz PCS frequency, but to my knowledge, they do not permit this -- it is locked out through phone programming.

In my experience, Verizon's signal does have better penetration than the higher-frequency SprintPCS, due to both basic physics, and a 20-year lead on installing cell sites and leasing property.

In some places, SprintPCS has teamed up with cable television providers to distribute their signal, but there are still large dead areas and frequent dropouts. I carry both a Sprint and Verizon phone when I travel, and find that the Verizon phone often has coverage when the Sprint is searching, but very rarely the other way around. In rural areas, the Sprint phone is a longshot.

i didnt read much of the responses to this thread but i would like to say that I VERY MUCH AGREE WITH THE ORIGINAL MESSSAGE

I've had both Voicestream and is currently with AT&T (in the Dallas and Austin area) and my critiques are exactly as he described. ATT drops my calls...ALOT...and sometimes it would be garbled...while displaying high reception bars. their customer service sucks. Voicestream, on the other hand, has alot more fricking features but it kinda sucks in doors

Ive had the FREE V60G with voicestream with web features... now with the (PAID) 150$ V60T with att which has alot less features and i regret having made the switch

I've been a SprintPCS customer for 4 years and I've been very satisfied with the service and reception. I travelled for a year along the east coast (Providence, New Jersey, Baltimore, Orlando, and back home to Nashville) and had great reception. When travelling to the in-laws house, I rarely lose signal, including at my destination of Beckley, West Virginia (I mean, we're talking remote, here).

Honeymoon in Vegas - great reception. Skiing in New Hampshire - great reception. Vacation in Destin - great reception. Scuba diving at Hilton Head - great reception. Elevator at work - okay, the reception goes out *sometimes*.

Customer service has been lacking at times, and that "Claire" automated customer service attendant has GOT to go. But for nationwide service, the plans are very competitive. Plus, the phones are great - I can't stand those tiny phones I have to hold with two fingers - I need something to wrap my hand around.

An additional perk: When I signed up with them, they allowed me to choose my phone number from those available. So, I've got a cell phone number with the last 4 digits that spell my name. Easy to remember for friends, family, co-workers and clients - it's earned me a few technical service calls from clients I might not have otherwise received.

I think the worst thing about most all of the cell phone service providers is the fact that they don't make any effort to give you a really GOOD rate plan until you threaten to cancel. SprintPCS, for example - their customer service reps don't have the authority to give a good rate plan - only those reps in the cancellation department can authorize the good rate plans. I've heard it's similar for most of the other providers. Do any of you have any experience regarding this?

Hands down.. Verizon #1.. everything else sucks... ATT is 2nd.. sprint.. voicestream.. and cingular... are so limited.. and a lot of their phones will only take digital connections making their phones useless in many many areas...

swNYC, I believe AT&T is set up with DoCoMo. Also I think it doesn't help that 50% of Americans are too stupid to use their phone . Saw the news yesterday and they said 50% of American's don't know how to use their phones beyond talk, numbers, and end. In my whole family (extended too) we have a total of 10 cell phones with AT&T, Cingular and Verizon of those 10 phones only 5 of us use features such as voicemail (hard to believe right). Only 4 fool around with other features of the phone (ie ringtones, etc). And only 2 are used to the fullest with text messaging, etc. One of them is mine . Of course 5 of them are used by older relatives (who call me because they get voicemail and they don't know how to get rid of them
but it's the trend of most of America.

I'm in SoCal and I like AT&T the best. Just switched to GSM and it seems fine. Now I can say Sprint is great here and like the original poster it strangely never woked in buildings. I started out with a single Pacbell cell phone (pre-cingular) but they sucked (both phone and customer service) so I moved to Sprint for 3 years. Initially they were okay but as they progressed their service got better. Oh the otherhand their customer service got worse, waited 75 minutes once for a rep. In my last year of service I was lied to and when adding on a phone the CS (who probably did it for spite) put me on a contract, took me off, and then put me back on. Giving me a phone bill of over $300 which took my over 4 hours to fix and thru 2 reps and one supervisor along with a bunch of tears after getting too frustrated. After that year was over they couldn't pay me to stay (took everyone with me $*&#@!% Sprint! 6 people along with another 5 or 6 people I referred to Sprint then referred to AT&T). I use AT&T now and it's been great. Working great in every building I've been, and excellent customer service. Now with the GSM/GPRS it is a bit more spotty, but I seem to get better signal than before, but sometimes you get what I call a pit of no signal. That's where all the sudden you just can't get a signal in a certain area whereas all around you get an excellent signal. Still it's not perfect or the best because in some areas a Verizon phone or even a *gasp* Sprint phone could be better, but remember it's also the same vice versa for other provider too. But that's my two cents...

Oh does anyone know? What is Nextel on. In late december they were already with a Network that gave them 3++ kbps. I was suprised but my friend have his going at that speed then so were they already on a 2.5G network?

Since none of us ar RF engineers working for the wireless companies (to my knowlege), there'd bound to be a few mistakes. But Slacktron, you've made a few yourself in your post to correct me.

Firstly, you are correct in stating that Sprint built an all PCS network (i.e. all 1900 mhz network), but wrong in the assumption that they quickly did away with their single-band phones. Last I was in a Sprint PCS store (about a year ago) I saw single-band models for sale. Some models, like the Touchpoint series, could be bought as a single-band model (not locked to 1900, but a true single band). And since Sprint's network buildout started much later than the telco's which became Verizon, in many areas they will have less coverage (as you say, especially rural). But while they did come late to the game, they were highly aggressive in getting the tower locations they need and their coverage is pretty remarkable if you compare it to the GSM companies that started at about the same time.

Secondly, Verizon does not ?lock out? their phones against 1900 mhz access. While Verizon does consist mainly of 800 mhz coverage, remember that Verizon absorbed 7 of the 10 PrimeCo markets which operated in the 1900mhz band. And in market where there was already a A/B carrier in the 800mhz range (possibly using TDMA and reluctant to sell), in order to increase coverage further, Verizon needs the PCS licenses (A-F). These licenses by definition are for the 1900mhz range only. So Verizon's phones are generally free to use whichever bandwidth is available.

How's AT&T GSM network in NYC? I am thinking of switching from Verizon to AT&T's Sony Ericsson T68i.
1000 min Anytime for 39.99 is what they are offering right now. Is AT&T GSM signal pretty much the same as their digital? if it is, i would be happy with it.
Also is long distance to Toronto free? I get free long distance to Toronto with my verizon service.

Worries about radiation from cell phones? Data looks inconclusive at this point, but according to one study my Motorola V120 is about the worst out there.

Any thoughts/opinions on this radiation issue? I'm getting a new phone next month and wonder how much of a criteria this should be in choosing a phone.

Just a slight correction from drue's post:
North American GSM is actually 1900MHz, not 1800MHz.
European GSM frequencies are 900/1800MHz.

And Sprint is pretty crappy in the Detroit area
