This isn't truly a hot deal, but I'm posting it here because many people will find this useful (I hope), and future hot deal posts on cell phones can refer back to this thread as supplemental info. Plus the info can potentially save you a lot of money, so here goes:

Phones
The "secret" is that the cell companies pay the retailers a couple hundred dollars commission per activation. Decently new cell phones are actually worth $100-$200 bucks. This means that you should find a seller who is willing to eat up the cost of the phone with a good portion of their commission. Most retail cellphone stores aren't willing to do this, so you might not be able to find one. But I can guarantee that any store in Chinatown (NYC) will do this and this is how some people get phones for really cheap. I go to school in the city but I live in Jersey, and even in NJ i found a small store nearby that does this. For example, right now you should not be paying more than $50 for a Sony Ericsson T68m with activation (the store in NJ and Chinatown will offer the T68m for about $40); and I have a family member who got a LG VX-1 with Verizon activation for $85. I suspect that the phone prices vary because certain cell services pay more commission than others.

Service
Here are the overall rankings of reception quality, and varies a bit depending on area, but this is generally (and please note the bolded type) what I've found to be true. I've tested this on the west coast, midwest, and east coast:

1. Nextel / Verizon - Nextel was designed for businesses, and so is very expensive but has really good reception; in fact, it really doesn't belong on this list because it's not really an option for personal cell use. Verizon is hands-down best overall in terms of reception for personal cellular service; it is the one cell service that I have gotten ppl from all over the country to agree as the best. Also, generally, Verizon will work at least anywhere AT&T works. A technical note: I don't know if this is 100% true but I've heard that even though both Verizon and Sprint use the CDMA protocol, Verizon tends to work better especially inside buildings because Verizon uses the 800mhz (among others) frequency, which penetrates buildings better than the frequencies that Sprint employs.

2. AT&T - ATT kinda sucks but it's still better than many other services. The common problem with ATT is that the phone would show many bars of reception, yet when you're actually talking, it'll randomly screw up or drop your calls. Basically, it's shaky and depends on what area you live in. Yes I know I'm going to anger lots of ATT fans, but perhaps ATT will be better once they fully implement GSM (by which time GSM will be obsolete and 3G will take over). Also, my friends who have the Motorola V60c with Verizon get perfect service while the friends who have the V60t with AT&T always complain of calls getting dropped, which is probably why AT&T offers the V60t for free while Verizon still offers the V60c (they look identical) for more than $100..

3. VoiceStream / Cingular - Being a decently satisfied VStream customer, I regret to rank it so low on the list. Cingular is here because it's basically the exact same thing as VoiceStream. VoiceStream/Cingular doesn't have very good coverage. It's usually the weakest when you're inside buildings. What VStream is good at, however, is it's high-tech features. So far, Vstream is the carrier that provides the most advanced features for free (go on AIM, check weather, check flight status, etc); and VStream/Cingular are the first ones to use GSM instead of unbelievably outdated protocols (TDMA, CDMA) that most other services use. In addition, VoiceStream attempts to make up for the low coverage with lots of minute. Right now you can get a national plan (meaning you can call to anywhere in the country as well as from anywhere in the country) for $40/mo with 500 weekday and unlimited weekend minutes.

4. Sprint PCS - I don't personally know any satisfied Sprint customers, but I believe Sprint does work well in very specific parts of the country; however, the phones are expensive and the service is usually unsatisfactory. Sprint can also be weak inside buildings (see #2 about Verizon).

So that's what I have learned so far about buying cell phones. I figure the more people know, the more chances we have at driving down cell prices. If you didn't like the post just let it drop instead of flaming and keeping it on top.

Thanks for the info, and I know you are well-intentioned. But placing Sprint #4 just because "you heard rumors" isn't exactly the best information. I have SprintPCS, and while the customer service is terrible, I have never had any gripes about signal quality and service. In fact, I have remained with sprint because it covers ALL of the extensive list of cities that I need reception in.

Oh, and their phones are cooler.

Lock this thread. First of all it's not a hot deal and secondly it provide somewhat wrong information. Actually this is just his own experience and opinion. ... :-/

Er... Sprint phones are actually quite cheap. The reason they seem more expensive than others is because they don't require activation/contract to purchase the phone. If you lose your cell phone for any other company and didn't get insurance... you're looking at about $200+. Furthermore, Sprint has the most features and the best phones always... color, full color web pages, text messaging, games, ringtones, screen savers, etc etc.

Otherwise, I'd pretty much agree with your ranking of service. As for all the naysayers, this is as he said in GENERAL and is not the case for every single location in the United States. But for the majority of users, this is how it is...

I live in Chicago, and for the most part, his service rankings are correct.

it just sucks that Verizon has the best service, but by far the worst phones and not so great deals.

either way...don't flame so much, instead use the space to talk about service in your area, that way we can actually contribute to the thread and not just destroy it.

Retailers get about $400-500 when a new customer signs a 2 year contract. Some also get a percentage of the ongoing account income. Big chains are able to negotiate better contracts with the cellular companies than individual providers.

Stop by my house with your Verizon and we'll see how far you get. "Can you hear me now?"

I've had no problems with Sprint so far. I live in NYC and went to school up in Troy. The last big problem i had with AT&T was that you'd get full reception and get " we're sorry, all circuits are busy now" I've never had this problem with Sprint. My only gripe about sprint is that their roaming sucks, and you have to pay for it, att and verizon both offer free roaming,

I'm a fan of VoiceStream (now T-Mobile).
Works great around here in the Detroit area, better plans (can you say 3000 regional minutes for $49.99?)

GSM phones are nicer; and you can roam all over Western Europe for $0.99/min. and keep your local phone #.

edit: couple other things. T-Mobile customer care is TOP NOTCH. 24hrs a day and never a hold time. Another technical issue with T-Mobile is that GSM technology does not allow for analog roaming, significantly worsening coverage in rural areas (basically none). GAIT technology from AT&T and Cingular will provide the best of both worlds in the future. It will allow phones that interoperate on GSM, TDMA, and analog networks, automatically selecting the strongest/best network signal.

Also Cingular varies widely by area. In SC and CA/NV they're GSM 1900, but elsewhere they're TDMA (generally 800MHz). So a GSM Cingular customer has to roam on another carrier (T-Mobile) when outside of CA/NV/SC. And conversely a TDMA cingular customer has to roam on AT&T when in CA/NV/SC.

A great place to get AT&T or T-Mobile phones is Amazon.com.
Lots of great phones for free (or better!) after rebate. Moto v66 is -50 for example, v60g is free; they'll pay you $100 to take a Samsung R225.

JD Power and Associates.

AT&T Wireless performed particularly well in meeting customer expectations in 2001. The company ranks highest in overall customer satisfaction in 13 markets, largely by demonstrating a competitive advantage in customer service, corporate capability and call quality. AT&T operates in 20 of the 25 markets included in the study.

I feel that AT&T customer service has gone downhill big time! It takes forever everytime I try to call them. My service seems to have dropped also. I am thinking about switching to TMobile when my contract expires next month.

Uhmm NO. GSM was first introduced in Europe in 1988 as a protocol to allow roaming within European Nations.

TDMA also known as Time Division Multiple Acces was intriduced in 1989 and CDMA also known as Code Division Multiple Access was introduced in 1993 to replace the aging AMPS protocol.

Do you really think CDMA is "unbeliveably outdated" when Korean CDMA networks are transferring data at 300kbps while GSM networks in the states can only transfer 9600bps?? You can use AIM or check whether on your cingular network if you want. I'm watching 8PM news on my SK telecom network.

Putting up opinion is one thing but you should try to get some facts straight.

Not a hot deal.

LOCK!
