Galaxy phones are pretty durable and now with Samsung Warranty covering a broken screen or water damage. I don't think I'm ever getting my phone a case.

Finally someone with a similar mindset as me. I never buy cases for my phones and the Galaxy S4 is no exception.

I'm getting my S4 hopefully tomorrow, but it looks like it won't arrive till Wednesday! Either way, I'm excited!

re: S4 build quality, I was reading some stuff about people putting their phones into their front pockets, walking around, then taking the phone out and finding that the AMOLED screen (not the Gorilla Glass) had cracked. Does anybody know more about this?

(edit: This was discussed lightly on page 77)

ive only heard it here by one user. I have mine in my front pocket for over a month and I have no issues. I am pretty sure that whomever this happens to there are other facts left out, like skinny ass jeans, walking into wall, etc etc.

It's probably similar to the 'bending' iPhone thing a few months ago, a possible but unlikely outcome.
Make something tall and thin and your going to magnify the forces that the device is subject to.
The OLED layer has always been the most fragile part of the screen, that's why the gorilla glass bit is on the outside.
Gorilla glass is surprisingly flexible, the OLED bit is not. It's more like thin lab glass (think microscope slides only thinner).

Yep. Actually, my ip5 did bend enough to be able to spin on its back. But, I keep it in my back pocket and really abuse it (mostly because I hate it). So yeah, abuse even in the pocket will break your gadget. My pants are fairly loose and my S4 goes in the front pocket nicely, not tight at all.

I saw a video on how to replace the screen on an S4, and the OLED layer is less than paper thin, and extremely brittle. Maybe... some flex occurred at the top portion of the phone. That's all it would take.

If it's the same as previous screens it's a bit thicker than that but they are very brittle.

I've been using S4 for almost a month, without case, just screen protector, always put it in my front pant's pocket, walk around a lot, and it's still look like new.

So I'm getting my S4 tomorrow, what's everyone's favourite ROM/tweaks?

I'm going to run it stock Touchwiz for a couple days to play with some of Samsung's software tweaks, but then I'll want to put stock 4.2.2 on there.

The Google Edition and presumably stock ROM will be out tomorrow, I'm pretty excited for that. I've been using CM10.1, and it works fine, adds a couple small cool features. But if the GE ROM actually has the proper driver for the IR controller, I'll just go with that and call it a day. It'd be nice to be back on Google's upgrade schedule too.

Touchwiz was just too horrendous for me, I gladly gave up all that motion/swipe crap to be back on a stock looking ROM.

The reason I'm on Touchwiz is because of IR, the camera and multi-window. Port any 2 of those to AOSP and I'll jump ship. Hopefully the GE will do that.

Oh yeah.. the google edition S4 is due tomorrow. It'll be interesting to see how much faster/responsive it is when all the Samsung bloat is gone, not to mention how much free space it'll have.

It will be interesting to see if they reformatted the GooS4 differently.

Odin wouldn't be smart enough to automatically fiddle with partitions if the new image has changed them, would it?
I can't imagine it'll be just as simple as flashing the new ROM via recovery and instantly having a perfect Nexus device. Would be a nice surprise though!
