Is the job market for engineers that bad? There's quite a few guys saying here that they can't find a job. Out here in Phoenix I had 3 different offers 5 months before I graduated. Maybe the market is worse in other areas?

err we can't find EEs to hire, demand is pretty damn high right now so not sure about a bad job market.

That's what I thought, we can't find enough good MEs and aeros. Our staffing levels are much lower than we'd like. My group has been without a manager (manger needs to be an engineer with experience in turbine engines, not some business school grad) for 2 months because we can't find anyone qualified that wants the job. Nobody inside my group wants the job because you end up spending a huge amount of your time managing rather than working on engines.

Most aerospace engineers are OLD. The average age in my turbine engines design group is 50+. They all hired on in the 60's and 70's when the cold war was going on, and the post cold war economy didn't need many more so they didn't hire many. Now this wave of people is approaching retirement and they don't have anybody to replace them. In the next 5-10 years you could move up pretty quickly.

It's pretty cool. The 'destructive testing' seems like the most fun. I've only seen one so far. Apparently you aren't supposed to feed turbines large hunks of ice. :Q

Wow. That is very impressive. Mind if I ask what field you are currently in (assuming you've found employment)?

I haven't been around to see that one yet. They knocked out a turbine blade and ran one for about 20 hours last week. It finally let go and they ended up using a rake to get all the pieces out of the sand (we test the big ones out in the middle of the desert). It lasted quite a bit longer than it needed to.
