The problem with Chicken of the VNC is that it is PPC, so even though it was wicked fast on PPC, it is fairly slow on Intel. It should be sufficient for most things, but doesn't have te chops for ScreenRecycler, which you can use to control another machine and use it as an external monitor.

Have you tried Xee? I find it pretty simple and useful for just image viewing.

For usenet try out Unison. It's absolutely fantastic!
