All right, to be fair: Why do some dog owners think it's acceptable to take their dogs EVERYWHERE?

My wife and I took our daughter to a festival today celebrating China and Chinese culture. We tend to try and make these things since our daughter is Chinese, and it benefits all of us to learn a little more about her country of birth. Anyway, festival wasn't great, but we noticed something.

Ok, it's a festival with a lot of people and plenty of food stands around. Why would people think it's acceptable to bring their dogs to these kinds of events?? We saw about a dozen dogs, and they were NOT helper dogs, at least not that I could tell (I've never seen a Chihuahua aid dog, have you?). There was possibly one aid dog, but it didn't have anything saying it was. That leaves quite a few others, and not all of them were small.

My wife mentioned it, and I just don't understand. Is the pooch that stricken with separation anxiety that you can't go for a few hours to a festival like that without him? There are people that are scared of dogs; others that are allergic, sometimes extremely so; and there is the possibility of two dogs fighting or the dog misbehaving around food. Keep in mind that this was not a venue with a tremendous amount of open space as parts were inside and the rest was scattered between buildings with one medium-sized open stage area (100ft across? filled with people for the most part).

Ok, cat owners can come and b!tch about dog owners in here.

My girlfriend and I take our 10 month old Golden Retriever with us pretty much everywhere, including little festivals like the one you're talking about. If they are trained well and take commands there is no reason they shouldn't go with their owners, as long as they're allowed by law to be there. Some outdoor events have signs that say no dogs allowed and we respect those places, but any others are fair game in our opinion. Our dog won't bother you anymore than your daughter would bother me.

EDIT: But like I said, this is assuming your dog is well behaved and listens. If my dog wasn't properly leash trained I would not take him out with us.

Was there a rule against dogs or is this a personal whine?

I cant stand people that take kids to public places. The kids are always crying and ruining everyones time not to mention kids are as filthy as dogs.

I don't see what you're complaining about... someone had to bring dinner!

Agreed, 100%. There should be a "breeders ordinance" preventing them from entering certain neighborhoods. Namely those i go to. Leave your offspring (and dogs, to remain on topic) at home for christs sake.

This was an outdoor event? I guess I'd have to be there, but I don't really see a problem with it as long as the dogs are well-behaved.

My grandparents had a bird that they used to take everywhere with them. That's kind of... strange.

Edit: I don't own a dog and never have.

If the venue prohibits dogs, you don't bring your dog (and most venues do). Otherwise, fair game. It's up to the venue owner to set prohibitions.

I don't bring my dogs anywhere that could be considered a public event, since we have a Great Dane (albeit a very small one a the moment) and many people are not comfortable around a dog that large.

Boy, aren't you a basketcase of emotions. You really need a livejournal or myspace to adequately hold this whiny rants.

Was there a rule against them? Is it that you simply personally didn't like dogs being there? I don't get it...

i take my dog with me to a lot of places...i never take it inside anyplace that has food or anything like that. if there is some kind of an even on our school quad, then i usually bring him. i enjoy taking him with me because it helps break the ice, gets him exercise, and he is just fund to have around. if my dog behaved badly, i probably wouldnt take him...

furthermore: i take my snake with me a lot of places too...this probably does more harm than help for her...but its funny to see people freak out...ahhh i'm a bastard...

I especially love the pit bull that lunged at a friend today at the beach. No collar, no leash, no restraint. Luckily, my fried was pulling out of his spot to move further down the beach - and the dog turned and went back. If he hadn't, he might have been introduced to the Taurus pistol my buddy carries in his SUV.

I really liked dodging the two steaming loads I saw on the beach too.

Yes, dogs are allowed on this beach, but they shouldn't be able to run at people, and their owers should at least pick up the sh1t their dogs leave.

And people say cat owners are irresponsible. :disgust:

Very good that you are teaching your adopted daughter about her culture, but I don't see the problem with people bringing dogs to an outdoor event as long as they clean up after them. If a festival was within walking distance and it ws a nice day then I would probably walk out there with the dog to check it out. I would not put the dog in the car to specifically take him though.

Bad dog manners - you always pick up after your pet!

people feel their pets are part of their own family, thus they may consider a dog to be allowed in such places where some may thinik is disrepsectful.

that is why such signs exist: no dogs or pets allowed beyond this point

you just have to use judgement, I mean, do you want to bring a dog into a movie theater or church building, or how about into your work office?

for most of us, it's common sense, but there are the few that will do anything to have their pets remain with them "at all times." -it's ridiculous, you wouldn't imagine the Americans that cannot understand that it is not negotiable that your pet "comes in or not."

p.s. we owned a dog before, but no one wanted to take care of it. sold it for a hundred or so bucks, female K9 I think. the dog was stupid obviously, untrained baby. I'm glad it's gone though, but at times I wish the dog would've trained itself for crying out loud~

I hate the people that take their dogs to the grocery store and other retail places and leave the dog in the car for the hour or more barking the whole time while they are shopping. I can understand taking them to outdoor stuff but taking them somewhere just to leave them in the car is dumb.

They only do that in southern China from what I understand. Hong Kong is big for that, though from an article we read when we were there, it's an underground market for the most part especially with the Olympics coming (to improve their international image).

The weird thing is that when you're in the countryside, you'll see dogs everywhere. They aren't pets, though. Most of the ones we saw we're shaved because they sell the hair for clothing (fur lined collars and such). Once the fur is no longer useful, they are slaughtered for food. Lovely!

You should try taking an English class or something before posting again, or is your life that useless that you have to bother posting something like this?

I love how people take posts around here personally, as if bandwidth and server space were at such a premium that each one diminishes the universe we live in.

The vast majority of the people could not walk to this event so they by necessity would have had to bring them in cars.

Personally, I enjoy seeing dogs in public when they are very well behaved, like in France (except they never pick up after them!!). Most dogs in the US aren't that well behaved, however. I just never want to see a street like the one I lived near in Grenoble, France -- it was about forty feet of wall to wall dog feces! It was extremely nasty, but the alternative to walking through it was about an extra 200 yards. I just held my breath.
