All these Processors?

Intel has P4 at 3.4 by the end of Q'04 they will be at 4.0 GHZ
now i look at Athlon and i don't understand all this

like

P4 at 3.4
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Socket 754 2.2GHz 1MB L2 Cache Processor


wouldn't the Intel P4 be faster cause its at 3.4
why AMD then?

I guess what am asking is will i be fast like the others running AMD, will my games run better? will my system be as stable as with Intel, this is going to be my first PC that i build with AMD

I don't know the reason that well, but apparently the Athlon processors are far more advanced than the Intel chips. Basically, the athlon 3400+ is equal to or slightly better than the 3.4GHz Pentium processor. The 3000+, then, will be equal to the 3.0GHz. Don't worry about the clock speeds.

Also, Athlon processors are (apparently) better for gaming and Intel's are better at compressing and such, so for a gaming rig Athlon is the better choice.

AMDs number represents the chip of intels that it compares to. So 3400+ is equal to 3.4 GHz P4. The AMD does more processing per clock cycle, meaning it can run at a lower speed (GHz) and still be as fast as the P4. In fact Intel finally is realizing that brute speed doesn't mean faster and better.

Yes the Athlon 64 will be as stable as the P4. In fact the AMD processor will run games faster. The only advantage that P4 has over Athlon 64 right now is video encoding. Also when the 64 bit Windows comes out later this year it should open up the gap between the current processors even more. AMD is usually a little bit cheaper as well, and runs cooler.

Get at least 512 MB of PC3200/DDR400.

Some good brands are Kingston, Crucial, Mushkin, OCZ
