Everyone seems to love the Klipsch speakers, but what about Altec Lansing? I've got a 3pc set from about 5yrs ago, ACS48, and these things rock. I am a stereo and music nut. I have an awesome $10,000 home theatre, so don't think I'm clueless, far from it. Stereos are a hobby of mine.

I'm listening to some DMB right now on these things and they are KICKIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These things can also get some awesome volume and keep crisp.

What do you all think?

I love Altec speakers, especially in the $50-$150 price range you can't buy anything better, and some of their 2 channel sets are top notch.

I think the Klispch ProMedia v.2-400's were crappy crappy speakers. Powerful bass, but that's it. Bad midrange, and I hate horn loaded tweeters...very fatiguing sound.

The 2.1s and 4.1s are suppose to fix the midrange which is good, and having a separate tweater is nice but I still don't like horn tweaters.

But the ProMedia's and Altecs arent' really in the same price range.

I think that you really have to hear promedias to decide if you like them. People like me love them but others hate them.

Altecs have always been low end.. years ago they were getting beaten silly quality-wise by cambridge soundworks... now the alternatives are far more

I'm also not impressed with the Klipsch's.
I mean a 3inch woofer and a rather small horn????
A dual 6.5inch "sub"???

Come on, that's really bad.
The only thing that got them the THX cert was the sheer amount of power the amp puts out.

cambridge FPS 2000 speakers rip all over any of the altec range not even close. Klipsch make some good sounding ones though.

ugh... I don't see any computer speakers with 6 inch woofers, 3inch mids, tweets, and 12 inch subs.

ACS48's are nice...and the ACS56's weren't half bad...cambridge soundworks were okay (yeah i've owned all these)...and a buddy of mine owns the 2 channel Klipsch with the supposed better mid range.

After hearing all this I just couldn't take the madness any more and I got some REAL speakers to use for my computer. If you have a receiver lying around (like I did, a nice one, but only Prologic...fine for what I needed) get yourself some good quality bookshelf speakers and thank me later.

The speakers I own have such a warm, well-balanced sound. All of the multi-media speakers I have heard (including Klipsch) have very tinny highs, hardly any mid range, and massively exaggerated bass. Great for games, horrible for music IMO. Your ears get "tired" after listening to most multi-media speakers for a while. That's the advantage of having a crisp, yet warm sounding speaker.

damn i love these speakers

Count me in, on the group that thinks the Klipsch are very overrated. Sure they're powerfull, but not very warm at all.

But keep in mind that speakers are very subjective. Just because one person thinks "x" speakers are the best, doesn't mean someone else will.

As for the Altec's, they sound real good... Until you listen to something better.

Again, imho.

I'd suggest you get your ears checked. I checked out the FPS 2000s vs. the ACS56s and found the ACS56s far, far superior.

Wasn't very impressed with the Klipschs either that a friend had in his home, but it was in such a abysmally bad location I don't think I can trust that evaluation.

people wait til you hear the NEW 4.1 Promedias!!!! They're the BOMB!!! of course thats just my thoughts of them after I watched a DVD with it. you dont know what you're missing from these New ones. But who will spend $300 bucks on just computer speakers. Its Insane I admit it. Playing Quake3 with it was fun cause you can almost feel the Rocket pass by
For gaming nothing beats it in the computer speaker business at $299. If you're not into games then don't even consider them cause you're wasting you money. Its so subjective, same as Monitors, Cases, Keyboards, etc. You gotta to love it before you buy it. There's no hype about these speakers they are GREAT (If you can afford them). Else get something cheaper like the BA4800's which are very nice as well but at half of the price. TRY IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT. CrapUSA has the 4.1's in stock.

I challenge a company to come out with the folowing:

A satellite with at least a pair of 4inch woofers or single 6.5inch, and a dome tweeter, with a 2500hz crossover point and half decent quality crossovers.
The sub with at least a 8inch woofer in a vented box (or bandpass if tuned properly)
At least 40watts RMS per sat, 80watts RMS for the sub.

That, IMO, will be a real setup.
But I doubt it'll happen

I'm still using ACS 45s on two of my rigs. Great speakers.

Good to be back State-side again.

I have the SoundWorks DTT3500 and I'm a happy camper. Got'm for around $200. I admit that they're not extremely loud but the sound quality is excellent in my opinion...especially the 5.1 setup. I set theyse puppies up to my dvd player in my front room on my big screen and the sound was awesome. I love these speakers when playing games especially. The bass is sufficient too, especially when placed properly. Of course this is all based on opinion. Good luck findin speakers ya like.

Yeah but it's a total waste. The Klipsch are 400 watts but I've seen 100 watt stereo speakers at 2 or 3 times the volume.

All I know is, I could never go back to computer speakers.

After listening to many different computer speakers I decided to purchase the Klipsch PM 4.1 system. They sound great for multimedia speakers...there is nothing wrong with them. If you like gaming they rock in that department; if you like music, they get an A+ there also. My home stereo is a beefy denon receiver + b&w 603s2 speakers, so needless to say I have good taste. For all of you that say they sound like crap, what are you listening to???? A $400 'top of the line' aiwa? Just curious....

edit These speakers will also point out ever shortcoming of your mp3s, guaranteed...just like your home system should. One of the main reasons I never hook my computer up to my home theater. Can your aiwa do that?!?!?!

For those of you who don't know.......

Watts don't mean much.......It's efficiency that's important.

You could have 100 watt of power going to inefficient speakers
and 10 watts going to really efficient speakers, and the 10watt set will be much louder.

So the number to look at are Sensitivity or Max DB. But not a lot of computer speakers list this info.

Sesitivity should be over 90.

Klipsch has always made very efficient speakers.

<Watts don't mean much.......It's efficiency that's important.>

Both are very important factors when picking out any type of speaker, so wattage means a lot..and not peak wattage, RMS (root means square). So you have the most efficient speakers in the world and a 100 watt amp pushing them, big deal they will get real loud and distort very quickly. Now if you had an amp that was 200 watts pushing those speakers they would be able to achieve a much higher volume level still sounding clean.

1. You look at speaker efficiency.
2. Look at speaker power handling.
3. Match up a quality amp at similar rating (rms).

If you buy the most efficient speakers made.......around 110db @1 watt/1 meter and put 1 watt of power in them (110decibels), they will blow away a speaker with a low efficiency with 200 watts to them.

I'm just talking about loudness, sound is another issue.

I think the klipsch ratings ARE RMS Thats whats so impressive.

Anybody ever try a 6.2 setup of boston accoustic speakers?

I have a set of BA4800 and another 3 piece micromedias hooked up to an Accoustic Edge.
Result is that I have 6 satellites and 2 subwoofers that make it hard to beat for the price
