<< divine, whats your take on midiland/diamond s2 4100? the general consensus is their sound quality is way above that of klipsch and a bit short of siroccos. personally i never had a chance to see the siroccos but i know they blow klipsch junk outta water. >>
I'll be honest, I haven't heard these. I took a look at a couple of the other Midiland sets, the 3 pieces ones, but haven't heard any of the 4 channels so I really can't comment. If the price is nice in comparison to the Boston's, I imagine they would be a competitor. I do know that Midiland's S4-8200 set will set you back over $400 and when you get into that price range, my personal feeling is that multimedia's seem like a waste at that price point.
<< Ugh... why is it with every computer speaker thread, there's always a few guys that pipe in saying if you want the best, hook the soundcard up to a receiver and get real speakers?? I mean, NO SH!T!! But not everyone can afford top of the line Martin Logan electrostatic speakers that cost 10x more than the computer itself. >>
I don't remember anyone mentioning Martin Logan electrostatics or any top of the line equipment!
My whole argument is this. If you can spend $300 + shipping for 4 Klipsch speakers plus a sub, spending $249 on a nice receiver and $200 on a pair of nice bookshelf speakers will get you a LOT more than with the Klipsch setup and will sound a lot better. I'm ONLY talking price brackets here. If you're spending several hundred dollars already, there is absolutely no reason you can't spend a little bit more, and get a LOT more for what you spend. If things like the Klipsch and Scirocco's didn't exist, HT buffs like myself would have no argument because the BA4800's are completely capable speakers at $150 shipped.
With a receiver you can support your computer, TV, VCR, DVD player, up to 5 speakers plus a subwoofer, and you get dolby digital decoding, which the Klipsch won't do
I really don't think I or anyone else in this thread who's recommended HT setups as an alternative, are too far off base here because of how expensive multimedia speakers are becoming. If you disagree, that's your right, we're just trying to open up people's eyes to new possibilities who may NOT know the differences and advantages to home theatre. I know that I personally have never meant any malicious intent when recommending HT gear over multimedia, and if a person chooses to do otherwise based on cost/size restrictions, I can promise you my feelings aren't hurt.
So as far as WHY do people do it? I think it's pretty simple. We're basic enthusiasts who want to share our hobby with others, and there's nothing wrong with that.
