the likelihood of anyone using pirated software for personal use and not distributing it on a wide-scale operation and getting arrested is slim...damn slim.

besides that, i agree w/ need4speed...rather harsh judgment claiming that anyone using pirated software is immoral (in regards to more than just the piracy) and/or stupid...they're simply cheap.

then again, if someone's purchased one copy of XP and has 2 or more computers at home, but acquired illegal copies to run on the other computers so he/she didn't have to pay a licensing fee, i wouldn't consider that person immoral...i wouldn't even consider that piracy...tho, by all means, it is.

using an MS alternative when u can't afford windows is easier said than done..especially when there's MS-specific software u need to run that doesn't run on linux or doesn't function properly or sufficiently under windows emulators...of course, that's not MS's problem, that's theirs.

I read that to say devilsown users are out of updates, AND XP corp is out of updates. We shall see, I guess.

FIRST OFF, m$ has been convicted of criminal antitrust in the USA and criminal software piracy in France. Who are they to tell anyone what is moral?

It's called stealing. That is a bit different than speeding. Theif.

No, just corp versions who's license key has been widely distributed.

You cant spell Microsoft or even the abbreviation MS and you are calling us stupid? Please!

>>>>SECOND, possession of any burned software

Wrong.

or mp3s is technically illegal,

Wrong again.

Read up on Fair Use.

but actually as illegal as driving 66 mph in a 65 mph highway.

Great, the over used "I steal because you speed" defense. Do I really have to combat this? BTW, I pay taxes that allow me to speed.

I haven't read this entire thread, but this is my view....

Microsoft has for years been overcharging for thier OS's and other software, software that is buggy, software that doesn't do what it's advertised to do. They have been selling junk to everyone, and instead of giving us a refund, or actually fixing their product, they just make a new version and expect you to pay full price for it. So what happens? You buy it, it's still broken, and they won't fix it.

Would you put up with buying any other retail product that doesn't work? In most cases I doubt it, but there is a difference. There really isn't a viable alternative to Windows for the most part. Yeah yeah, I know about all the Unix based systems out there and how great they are, but for the vast majority of users they are not a viable option. Macs? Never used one myself, but I hear it's a superior platform to the PC. Don't doubt it a bit. But the world is PC based and I'd imagine you'd be pretty limited to the software you could buy for them.

So most of us are stuck with Windows. Microsoft steals from and cheats millions of people every year. Who cares if someone burns a copy of XP, or downloads Office 2000? I certainly don't. I'd like a copy of Win2000 pro and XP pro from Microsoft for free, just to make up for the money I wasted on 3.1, 95, 98 and Me. I think they owe me that much.....

Very little of your post makes sense (to me at least). But, to answer these two specific points:

a) You aren't expected to 'pay full price'. Every version you mentioned had upgrade pricing from the previous version much less than 'full price'

and

b) 'They still won't fix it'. This thread is about MS making upgrades available (for free) to those you purchase the product. How does that equate to 'won't fix it'?

Software piracy is a crime. You can blame MS all you want, but at the end of the day, noone is really forcing you to upgrade. Piracy does hurt the software companies, and individuals (like myself).

OOOOOOO, the free patch!!! (btw, since you are being so literate, I will point out that Microsoft has NEVER given a free product update. Patches yes, updates, no.)

So, you think $90 is a reasonable price for an upgrade? No, nobody FORCED me to upgrade, but Microsoft sells products that don't work properly. And they offer no warranty, no refund. Microsoft is guilty of more crimes than I will ever be guilty of, spare me the moral BS.

And this thread is titled "All those running pirated Windows XP - read this!" Not "MS making upgrades available (for free) to those (of) you (that) purchase the product. "

You are the one that isn't making sense here, bub. MS making upgrades available for free????? Where the hell did you hear that?

> $90 is a reasonable price for an upgrade

Since new video games are going for about $50, and I can play thru one in a week or two. I think $90 for an OS that I'll probably use for 2+ years is fair. That said, the majority of the people are getting that for much less (as part of their computer purchase).

> I will point out that Microsoft has NEVER given a free product update. Patches yes, updates, no

I guess we can argue over terminology if you want. Most of the NT service packs contained signifigant new functionality, they were way more than just 'patches'. True, however, what we are talking about here is an 'update' not an 'upgrade'.

That said, 'bub', it's still stealing. You can try to blame the victim (in this case MS), but it doesn't change the facts.

Wow monkey, I think you went just a tad over board there for a sec.

Stealing is wrong, period. Even if I do it, it's still wrong.

The fact is, there is no real justification for stealing, or going 66 in a 65 zone.

Two wrongs don't make a right, so if the govt. steals from you in their way, does that allow you to rip off the government too? No (but I'd probably still do it though)

Software pirates have no leg to stand on. If you pirated the software, fine. but don't bitch about the way they are trying to combat it. You pay mad loot to have that uber system, and want to complain about The OS? that's madness. I had used Win 98 from a CD key that my cousin gave me, and that was fine. but I had no prob going out and buying XP home for my son, and Pro for myself.

Grow up. And stop bitching about how its getting so hard to buck the system nowadays.
