Mixxen,

That advice makes no sense at all. Unless you're watching a movie why let Hollywood force you into a specific aspect ratio? fact of the matter is 1280x1024 as a windows desktop resolution provides you with more screen area to work in. Switching to 1280x960 just deprives yourself of pixels.

When I upgrade my monitor I plan to delve deeply into custom resolutions. Some may be 4:3, some might not.

Before I got my Radeon, I ran 1280X960. But now I can hardly tell the difference at 1280X1024. Things are a little bit horizontally stretched out, but I got used to it real fast.

Oh and I think you mean 1600X1200 Alphanumeric?

JellyBaby,

Well, you are essentially distorting the image on your screen by running a 5:4 resolution, since your monitor is a 4:3 ratio. It's not your fault that you run at a distorted resolution it's the industries fault for standardizing a 5:4 resolution in the first place.

So I use a custom resolution because of the big gap between 1280x960 and 1600x1200....

1400x1050 perfect

johneetrash,

You should open the .inf file that comes with your radeon drivers in notepad. Look for patterns in the resolution calls and create your own resolution based on the patterns you notice.

Then you need to reinstall the drivers with the new .inf file you created.

1024/768 32 color @100 Hz Its hard to find free wallpaper for a higher rez, and the 2d looks like crap at any higher rez with a Nvidia Gforce/app grill display.

<< i want 1400x1050 anyone figure out how to do custom res with radeons? >>

You can edit the registry and enable different resolutions, but the radeon only support 60hz at that res., you can also change to 1280x960 if you want, all info can be found here.

I ran 1280x1024x16bit@85hz. why not 1280x960? because it doesn't matter to me. all my apps at 1280x1024 is windowed anyway, so there's no need to stick with the old 4:3 resolution. playing game is another issue of course...

tried 1600x1200, it'll kill my eyes.. since I don't like to stick my head all the way forward

esung,

So what if your apps are windowed, they are distorted because your monitor has a 4:3 dimension.

To clarify this better, imagine you have a monitor that is 16:9. Use a 4:3 resolution and everything is distorted, it doesn't matter if the program is in a window, everything on the screen is distorted.

If your monitor is made with a 5:4 screen, then, yes, by all means use 1280x1024, but more than likely you have a standard 4:3 monitor. It makes no freaken sense to run at a resolution ratio different from your monitor, unless you enjoy looking at distorted images. I can't believe there are so many people are using 1280x1024...ahhhhhhh! :|

Now, to explain the distortion better....make a 200x200 square in paint. On a 4:3 resolution and 4:3 monitor you will see a perfect square. On a 5:4 resolution and 4:3 monitor, you will SEE a rectangle with the dimensions of 200x213. Almost 7% distortion! So why are you still running at 1280x1024, ack!
