I'm Korean (not upper class but I guess upper middle class) and my parents were the opposite. They didn't hammer me on education neither and said we will support you no matter what you choose to do in life.

My father in law woudl grab the phone out of his daughters hands if he heard them talking in english when they first came to the US.

My wife and her dad argue all the time. That and being she was in her late 20's when we got together I guess her family was just happy she found soemoen that could handle her.

im a 1.5 generation.

Meaning i was born in korea, but raised here. I personally dont have any racial actions against any race. I grew up in a very diversified enviorment.

Yet the moment my parents see me hanging out with a non korean girl, there first comment is, "play right?"

I partially agree with this statement. Koreans tend to be very conservative; my fiancee's parents wouldn't even agree to meet me until we had been dating for a little less than a year. I think they were unhappy that I wasn't korean.

I dated and fell in love with a girl from Hong Kong. I even learned to speak Cantonese and read (guess) the written language.

She dumped me because she lived with her brother at the time and he didn't like white guys. Plus she felt I was too handsome for her. She thought I would look for someone better looking than her. She must have been blind.

But I heard from one of her co-workers that she did marry a white guy a couple of years after we dated. She said he looked like a short version of the Michellin Man.

It's not all that hard to believe. Even if you watch a few minutes of travel / food shows, you can see some of their conditions. Why wouldn't they want the best for their kids / themselves... being from America, you're automatically better off for a lot of them.

Isn't Hong Kong pretty rich though? I think the GDP there is $30,000. On the list of Highest IQ Nations, Hong Kong was #1 and South Korea was #2... but it's a weird list because Hong Kong isn't a nation.

we have several interracial relationships in our family, but it's a good mix of both. i dont think the older people in our family cared that much. my brother is dating a vietnamese girl and im dating a white girl. i have 3 male cousins w/ white wives and a female cousin w/ a white husband i would consider us middle class but alot of my cousins are doctors engineers and lawyers

I actually meant "best" in terms of the trashy, trampy, mini-skirt, revealing-yet-not-well-endowed types. Or I guess you could say, the types that get my attention. If I bothered to look and remember, most regular couples probably aren't gangsta.

yeah definitely noticed that too. I feel like for some reason non-asian guys view asian girls differently, and have slightly differing standards in terms of beauty. Not necessarily different, but overlapping, I guess.

If her parents are old (read:50-70) then they were definitely unhappy. Magnanimous for them to accept you, but they will probably have a small twinge of regret for the rest of their lives that their daughter's husband wasn't korean. Of course, that small twinge of regret should be small in the face of their daughter's happiness, if they are not so close-minded.

Interesting conversation. My mom's side of the family thought dating asian women was the same thing as joing the navy, going overseas and getting a filipino girl pregnant. My dad's side was more interested in the connections one made with the other family. If they came from the same or better economic rung as they are, then go ahead and marry them. However, this did not apply to black girls unfortunately.

Mom's family, mostly Texans. Dad's family, mostly tidewater Virginians.

I think this also applied to my sister too. Her first marriage was not well liked on my dad's side because he was a white enlisted Navy man. (Enlisted and not officer = :shocked: ) Dad ended up using some of his old military connections to get his (former) son-in-law into the enlisted OCS (officer candidate school).

Funny...as I am just typing this, I realized something. After my sister got divorced her ex joined a Pacific task group and got a Japanese girl pregnant on the first week of shore leave.
