i've never been tested, but i think i'm slightly allergic to booze :frown: Frequently, I my nose gets stuffed up after a few drinks.

however, about once or so a month, i get severely stuffed up and my face/neck turns beet red and warms up significantly. like tonight, i've had 2 glasses of wine and my face is red and I can feel my heart beating a little harder than normal.

what's that all about?

i think wine is the culprit. does beer give you the same reaction?

yep.. even vodka, rum, etc.. but like i said, it only gets this bad once a month or so - that's what's weird. I could understand if it got his bad each time I drank, but it doesn't

dear lord! this must be horrible.

actually, though, I tend to get the same reaction after a few drinks. beer, wine, doesn't really matter. Though, I'm usually hopped-up on loratidine + suphedrin 24/7, so I wouldn't exactly call my situation a good control for this small sample.

it's normally not this bad. i do keep my afrin handy... a few squirts in each nostril usually clears me up pretty fast

Many people of Asian descent experience an unusual flushing reaction after drinking alcohol ? even in very small amounts. This is caused by a genetic disorder in which the body is unable to break down alcohol completely.

nope... irish + mexican/spanish. with those genes I should have no problem with alcohol.

Yep, I can't drink alcohol, not much anyway. A glass of wine, and my face is red, my nose is stuffed, heavy breathing, the works. My cousins, on the other hand, drink like fish.

A long-time friend of mine is acutely allergic to alcohol. Unfortunately, he found out the hard way. When he was 13-14 years old, he ordered a drunken pork chop (seared in vodka) for dinner, and wound up in the hospital for three days after his throat nearly closed shut. YOu should feel lucky.

95% of the time, I can and do drink like a fish... only on these certain occasions does this happen. one of the articles mentioned something about eating before drinking. I did eat, but not a whole lot. maybe that's one of the catalysts.

..explains a lot.

Acetaldehyde and hangovers
Most people of East Asian descent have a mutation in their alcohol dehydrogenase gene that makes this enzyme unusually effective at converting ethanol to acetaldehyde, and about half of such people also have a form of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase that is less effective at converting acetaldehyde to acetic acid.[2] This combination causes them to suffer from the alcohol flush reaction, in which acetaldehyde accumulates after drinking, leading to severe and immediate hangover symptoms. These people are therefore less likely to become alcoholics. The drug disulfiram (Antabuse) also prevents the oxidation of acetaldehyde to acetic acid, with the same unpleasant effects for drinkers. It is used in the treatment of alcoholism.

Symptoms he has from 1 shot:

Convulsions
Increase heart rate
Increase body temperature
Lost of conscious
Heavy perspiration

This is within minutes of drinking it.

It's not possible to be allergic to ethanol.

You might have some reaction to it (or more likely yeast fermentation by products) that's weird atypical or whatever, but a type I hypersensitivity isn't going to happen.

Keep in mind your intestinal flora produce ethanol every day.
