alone with many here, this will only work if you can convince everyone to use it, same as whatsapp. years ago we had 1 friend who tried to get everyone to use whatsap, we all pmuch told him to F-off and just continued to send him normal SMS messages, because you know what, everyone with a phone number gets those and they always work

at this point I don't know a single person who uses anything besides normal SMS/MMS messaging and maybe facebook if they are into facebook

Found a really funny issue.... It can't text Google voice numbers. I am getting disappointed with Google lately. A lot of stupid things they've done recently.

And as I've been saying, the haterade brigade has arrived, it seems. All these haters, barely any of them even trying the app. I wonder why numbers are going to be low?

Like I said, self-fulfilling prophecy.

Ok, so I have Allo and all 3 of my millenial-age children do as well. We like it a lot, using the Google Assistant in our chats is neat and helpful. I'm not going to say that we think Allo is a feature complete product, we'd love to have full SMS integration but for now it's usable and fun.

I have Allo installed and have played with it a little bit but lack of clean SMS integration pretty much makes the app a non-starter for me. Everyone I know still uses SMS for messaging and they aren't interested in moving to a new app.

I haven't read all the responses so maybe this is a common thought, but I was under the impression that this could replace the Messengers app and be utilized for regular texts just with extra features. That doesn't seem to be the case... it just seems like a less useful Hangouts because at least hangouts could display your normal texts.

Very disappointed. I've actually been so disappointed with Google's direction recently that I started to consider moving to Apple again. They have their own drawbacks though, so who knows. 2016 is probably the most diappointing year in the mobile spectrum for me... nothing has panned out the way I was hoping.

Same here, and I never expected to say that.

I'm hopeful that they will add SMS to Allo, but yeah I'm pretty much disappointed with the developments in Androidland in 2016. And this includes Nougat. I am very happy to be running Marshmallow right now (2015) on my OnePlus One (2014).

I'm just burned out on all the messaging platforms, there was a PC based messaging app that tied together a handful of other messaging programs, time for a mobile equivalent of that.

It's really not that bad. It's OK. Unfortunately OK isn't going to get people to switch to it.

It's the same problem Microsoft has in mobile. You have to offer people something better to get them to switch and the markets are fairly mature now so disruptive innovations are unlikely.

You are right that better is necessary to get people to switch, which is why it's quite bad when it's worse in many ways than the hangouts it's supposed to be replacing.

My problems with Allo:
a.) Not multi-platform, so I cannot use it on multiple devices(PC, Chromebook, phone, and tablet).
b.) Lack of Google Voice integration.
c.) Cloud sync meaning you don't lose your message history when moving to or answering from a new/different device.

Google hasn't given me a reason to try the app. I've read enough about Allo to know that it currently does not support any of those features so there is no need for me to even try the app today because it doesn't fit my needs. If there is any self-fulfilling prophecy here, it was created by Google by not having it ready with those features.

Google needs to link Allo to the Google account and not just only the phone number so they can enable those features ASAP.

Agree with all of this.

It's not hard to be prophetic about Google's failure in this when they keep doing the same thing over and over again. They release incomplete products that they give up on improving after 1-3 years in favor of something new and shiny.

Maybe it's about time they pry the lazy pricks out of their sleep pods and get some actual work done. I know it sounds ridiculous, but as of late you can almost feel the lack of proper direction from Google's projects. They seem to be lacking proper leadership and good project managers. Maybe things are TOO free to have any sort of cohesive vision?

I agree with your post. I'd have a much easier time coaxing my friends and extended family to try Allo especially if they implemented a. and c. None of uses Google Voice but it would be a wise thing for Google to give us item b. also.

I dunno, if it was cross platform, I'd give it a shot, as it stands, not going to bother. I really like getting messages on my laptop and tablets as well as my phone.
