Allowing certain mathematical characters?

Does anyone else agree with the idea of allowing special math notation to be put in posts? Sometimes when mathematical or physical concepts come up in threads, the posters are forced to compromise in regard to using accurate symbols, and the result looks messy. Is adding capability for mathematical symbols a feasible idea?

It would be nice if they could implement this. Perhaps using TeX like Wikipedia does.

Of course I'm sure implementing TeX would not be an easy task and would take quite a while to do but it is an idea.

Would it work if you used the 'code' feature that is enabled in the software forum?

I would want it to be able to use calculus symbols and other unusual characters as well. (I'm demanding a lot for something that hasn't even been considered yet!)

I've heard of MathML, but even if there were a way to embed it, what browsers could understand/display it? Methinks we need an image-based solution, but the admins don't want to enable embedded images here, and I can understand their reasoning (especially for OT). A very unlikely perhaps, but could they make an exception for Highly Technical?

I suppose a "not-quite-easy" but feasable workaround would be to type it up in word or something, screen shot, upload it to one of our many free picture hosting services and just link it.

Not the best way I'm sure, but it would allow you to show your special symbols.

I've tried to help a bunch of people with physics and calculus problems... lack of mathematical symbols (and even just subscripts) has made quite a few of them difficult to read at best.

We're looking at Math support in 2.5, we would use our already OEM'd wysiwyg editor which can do Math as well with a plugin.
