If you make it yourself (roast the nuts in the oven, make your nut butter in a durable blender such as an Osterizer), the cost of exotic nut butters is comparable to that of already roasted and ground natural peanut butter. However, even so, I make my own peanut butter and haven't made almond or cashew butter for a while. They're very good, but I'm happy with peanut butter nowadays.
If you want to buy almond butter or cashew butter you should find them at Trader Joe's. Whole Foods as well, of course. Costco has good deals on almonds (2 lb bags). For cashew butter, buy cashew pieces, which you can get at Trader Joe's in 1 lb bags. They are preroasted, so that saves you some trouble.
