That's the point when you should open "My Computer" and browse the contents (no longer empty after you tapped "trust").

I've been able to pull photos by plugging in my iphone and just pulling them off via explorer, but I don't remember if I had to change a certain setting in iTunes to make that happen.

It reencodes your pictures and decreases quality.

iCloud Photo Library keeps full version online. There's also a preference to "optimize storage" for the ones on your device, which can replace the local copy with a re-encoded version. Recommended for lower-capacity devices.

Had to delete a driver to get it to be recognized as a mass storage device.

Strange. Maybe an ancient 32-bit version of iTunes and other software libraries on a 64-bit system...?

I found an old "early 2009" 24-inch iMac at a thrift store for $200. Bought it for my mother and replaced the hard drive.

She doesn't need to copy photos to the computer at all. With iCloud Photo Library, they are already on her computer.

All the albums and sorting / grouping / cropping / rotating / tweaking synchronizes between them. Delete from one device and it disappears from the other too. Makes it much easier to go through the pictures. Very cool.

This problem that was already solved by Apple software and services, but your mother would need to be a little bit more into the Apple ecosystem.

Plug it in?!? What is this, 2009? Let iCloud photo backup do it's thing, and your pictures will magically show up in the Photos app on all of your iDevices in a few hours.
