Hey guys, I jus installed a 8045 in my case ( changed from an sk6 with delta eeeek!!!) and have a few questions / problems. I believe I installed the heatsink (with a panaflo H1a) right and I'm wondering waht could be causeing my relitivly high temp. with the case closed i get a temp of 42 deg idle but with it open it dropps to 36. I have a supermicro 750 A case (its a beast) and 2 med speed 80 mm fans intake and 1 60mm fan outake as well as 1 80mm fan. anysuggestions?

If it drops that much with the case side open, then its a case cooling issue, not a heatsink one.

Thats a big case, and will need a lot of air volume to keep it cool. On mine I found that a pair of 84 cfm 120mm fans pretty much did the trick, one on intake and one exhaust up high. Also use the 60mm behind the CPU for exhaust.

If you don't modify it, you will be best to fill all of the intake and exhaust locations with decent fans. Don't bother with the drivebay side mount fans though, they aren't very useful and the openeings are pretty restrictive.

I had the exact same issue! The problem is case exhaust! Since the Alpha's fan is sucking from the HS it is blowing how air into the case, if you hace no rear exhaust it can just suck that same hot air right throught the fins of the Alpha. You can add a very quiet panaflo or enermax adjustable 80mm fan on the back of the case next to the HS if you have room. Like this picture just adding this on fan has dropped CPU temps a bunch! I have it set to low so you can barely hear it. If you have a spot for it, DO IT!

I suggest trying the Alpha with it set to blow at the heatsink.. the temps would probably end up much better..

However, your main problem is the pressure caused by a poorly executed airflow pattern in these huge cases and with the airflow in your case the way it is a heatsink that sucks away heat will be much less effective.. so set that mofo to blow

You could try that, I did. The results were not good. The fins on that delta are so thick and close together that you create more back pressure and your fan winds up chocking in it own backwash! If you are using a high output fan that may work. But since the majority of the people using an Alpha are doing so for quiet, they are using low speed fans and those just choke when blowing onto the HS. But results vary from person to person so definitly explore all option!
