Golden Orb is more then adequate for a 700E if you overclock it, also alot cheaper to.

I bought a PEP66U to replace my golden orb for my P3 650E cBo at 975Mhz at 1.75v. My CPU temp dropped from 48 idle to 46 idle and I was also able to bump to voltage down to 1.7v which decreased the CPU temp to 45. I would say that if you aren't afraid to spend the money for the Alpha go fo it over the gorb.

I recently bought an Alpha to replace my Golden Orb and it only dropped my temps by 1f. I took it back as the 1f temp drop was not worth the price differerce.

veryape - What speed were you running your CPU at? Those are very disappointing results! I couldn't have returned mine, but I would have been very disappointed if those were the results I got.

well, i tried out my sister's orb on my P3-650e cb0 @ 975 @ 1.75 volts..

at idle, the difference was nil... Under full load, the Orb hit temps of at least 6 degrees C higher than the PEP66 usually does.

veryape, It could be that the feet on your PEP66 were just a hair too high. This causes your heatsink and CPU to not make proper contact...

I aslo have to say that I have three Gorbs, and a bunch of alphas, and the alphas are more usefull (I want to see a TEC with a gorb ), and better performing....
But they are more expensive....
some may not find it worth the cost, All systems I build for others, or help them build, have either stock fans, or Gorbs. ALL systems for myself have Alphas (well not the Xeon) I have a PEP66, a P125, and 2 PFH60's .
edit- I also have a PEP66 at work on my 600E

I was just thinking, I said in my first post that those were my idle speeds. Well that is not actually true because I have the RC5 client running all the time. Sorry about that mix-up.

Okay, well I don't mind spending an extra 20 bucks or so to get better performance. Should I order from 2cool, or does someplace-else have them cheaper?

Also, 2cooltek's description of the PEP66 is that it is specifically designed for Slot1 --> Socket adapters. Does this mean I can't use it on a regular Socket mobo (Asus CUSL2/FC-PGA p3)

Well, the Alpha rox, but it blocks one of my DIMM slots. Damn huge!

Arctic Silver is nice too.

no, if you're using socket 370 mobo, get the pal35t alphas, otherwise, get the pep66ts

If you do order the PEP66 get it from 2Cool. But no, don't use it with a socket motherboard. The PEP66 has the fan mounted on the side of the heatsink so that it doesn't block as many dimms on your motherboard when you use a slocket. That fan placement could create some probs on a socket board.

Wow. There's a lot more Alpha coolers than I thought there was.

Anyway, I guess I'm looking at the FC-PAL series. But I don't understand the differences between any of them. There's certainly a price difference:

FC-PAL15T: $20
FC-PAL15U: $32.30
FC-PAL30T: $25.30
FC-PAL30U: $34.50
FC-PAL35T: $26
FC-PAL35U: $35.10

So can anyone tell me the difference? :Q

I could be mistaken, but I believe the "U" means that it is a kit and includes all the goodies like a little tube of thermal grease. (maybe fan too?)

Does anyone know for sure?

Do you know if it's GOOD thermal grease or am I gonna have to plop down $15 extra for some Artic Silver?

The C includes the heatsink, and the clip (maybe)
The T includes the intake cover and the Screws for it,
The U includes the intake cover and the screws for it, also the fan and thermal paste (not as good as the silver, but it's better then radio shacks.... About a year ago (before all this silver stuff) this paste was said to be the Shiznet...

FC-PAL15T: $20
FC-PAL15U: $32.30
FC-PAL15U 0.80 deg C/W = BAD

FC-PAL30T: $25.30
FC-PAL30U: $34.50
FC-PAL30U 0.39 deg C/W = BETTER

FC-PAL35T: $26
FC-PAL35U: $35.10
PAL6035MUC 0.37 deg C/W = BEST

I appreciate that, but someone's going to have to translate that into English for me. How is that compared to Artic Silver, and if Artic Silver is better is it better enough to spend an extra $15 on it?

all you need to look at is the thermal conductivity.

4.8-5 is much better than .8...something....

if you don't want to spend $15 for the arctic silver, get copper paste for $5. Copper paste thermal conductivity is very close to the arctic silver..for $10 less
