Copper paste is electrically conductive. That's not a big deal for an FC-PGA chip but just don't plan on using it on your other chips. (eg. some video cards, etc.)

don't forget that the arctic silver is nonconductive, so you won't risk frying something if you mess up.

don't ask me how they do it. I don't know.

Boy after looking at all this I may have to get some of that Arctic Silver
But konichiwa, I would get the FC-PAL35U, you get the fan, and an almost free (and pretty big) tube of paste. You can use it for whatever, I always find it handy having extra thermal paste around... But I might just be a geek.

Well, you are a geek, but who isn't? Okay, I guess if I'm gonna go, go all out, huh?

So the 35U it is, and some extra Artic Silver. God damn, 50 bucks for a heatsink/fan/paste combo. It'd better work!

The alpha thermal paste is pretty good.... if you have it, unless you want the 1-3 degree C drop by switching to Artic Silver, you can just use the Alpha stuff...

I was out of grease, which is why I bought the Artic Silver... I must say, though.. the stuff is great!

Yeah. I also hope that you'll receive your item on Monday. However, I doubt it. After six days -- and no change in the status of my order, I cancelled it. This company is fine if you can wait. If you can't wait, then go elsewhere and make your purchase.

I substituted the Golden Orb with an Alpha PAL35t with the Sunon fan. The Celeron 840A temperature went up 2F in idle. Very disappointing results.

In close examination of the thermal paste pattern after removing the heat sink, I determined that the Alpha is not in as close contact with the CPU slug due to the thickness of the plastic feet.

I am reluctant to sand down the plastic feet. I fear that I could make it worse if the sanding in uneven. Anyone has encounter similar problem and has a good solution?

The Celeron 840A @ 1.75 Vcore is running 18F above case temperature with the Golden Orb and 20F with the Alpha PAL35t. Both are very good results.

Thermite88-

Not that tough to sand it down. get a sheet of 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper, and a really flat surface, like a plate glass table to do the work on. Hold the sandpaper grit side up on the table, and move the workpiece with a swirling motion, rotating your grip 90 degrees every few swirls. Go easy at first, to get a feel for how fast it cuts. Put the heatsink against the cpu and hold it up to a light to check the clearance.(Do this before you start sanding, too) repeat til it looks right, and maybe a tiny bit more. Go slow, be patient. you may notice that the processor is not really very flat, sanding fcpga processors is only for those whose ba!!s are bigger than their brains. Even if the sink rocks on the slug a very (repeat, very) tiny bit, it is better than having any clearance. I think that this is a QC issue for Intel, rather than Alpha. Intel simply does not have to hold this dimension really tight for the stock HSF. My alpha rocked a little bit out of the box, but works great.

Jhhnn,

Thank you for the suggestion. I think I will stick with the Golden Orb for now.

Years ago when I was in graduate school, I did all sort of polishing for surface finish. It is not easy to get a even grind on separate pieces mounted on the same substrat.

Hi All:

___The Alpha?s or the top GlobalWin?s are a great choice for the best in thermal performance but for sound output, the Golden Orb?s 4200 RPM model is only ~ ½ that of the YS tech fan?s on either the Alpha?s or GlobalWin?s great performers. The 5400 RPM Golden Orb which soon to be released may make the thermal issue mute but the sound will rise accordingly as well

___Good Luck

the orbs are great for the price, and quieter to boot(which is why I put one on my sister's cpu for college)..

but for me, I prefer the Alpha's overall better cooling.
