I didn't like FLCL that much either. It was mostly style above all, and the style itself is kinda gross and pandering. I watched it all in one sitting when I was particularly bored and it was alright like that, but overall it was too lolrandom4me.

I will say for you guys that say it's all love stories, check out one punch man. It may devolve into that later (first season isn't done) but right now it's pretty much stupid fun.

Also, one I will never watch is fairytale.

Oh wow. I tried to watch that and it was so . . . I don't even know what to call it. It made Power Puff girls feel like a documentary.
Apparently it's a high school girls dream anime. I saw one of the characters and bailed. D:

Anime is some real neckbeard shit. Buncha virgin love stories or some such, makes me uncomfortable. Might as well hand in your man card if you ask me.

I have tried to like the "good ones," but I always interpret them thus ^
I'd like to see if you and I have similar tastes. Like you, I also loathe most anime. Which "good ones" did you try?

I can also recommend Mushi-shi, it's almost like a documentary anime...except totally kick ass.

I'll admit I dislike anime, but I've watched one punch man and thought it was pretty funny. Now my friends are telling me to watch Full metal alchemist.

So do I watch the first one or brotherhood? I've heard brotherhood looks much better and is less boring, but I don't want to miss any story.

second one

note that One Punch Man & FMA are not anything alike

Yeah, I've gathered that, but FMA seems a bit darker than most and at least misses some of the sappy stuff. I figured I might as well try a popular one so I don't have to go through the millions of anime to find one I like.

Do you know any like One Punch Man? Specifically being more like a normal comedy show than an anime? (I hope you get the vibe I'm going for)

Watch Brotherhood over the original. As mentioned, Brotherhood is the anime that follows the plot of the manga. It's the same as stuff like Hellsing vs. Hellsing Ultimate. The first one starts because the manga is popular, runs out of content, decides to keep going with its own story, and finishes far before the source material (manga, light novel, etc.). You'll see a lot of parallels between them since they share the same source material, but they eventually split off. I think Hagane no Renkinjutsushi (HagaRen) splits off around episode 12 or something like that.

not quite.

the first FMA anime started a bit after the manga. they eventually caught up to where the manga was (iow: didnt have an ending) so the production company made up their own story conclusion while the mangaka kept going.

FMA brotherhood came out after the mangaka finished the series, so it follows the canon.

Actually, Brotherhood finished only a few months after the manga finished. If I remember correctly, HagaRen was a monthly serial, so it's really not that surprising. I don't see too many weekly, non-split anime for monthly serials that don't inevitably catch up. People complained about Shigeki no Kyojin (ShinKyo) ending so soon, but they don't realize that it would've ran out of manga to animate if they didn't stop as ShinKyo is also a monthly serial.

There is nothing wrong with Fairy Tail.

While I read Fairy Tail's manga, I prefer Nanatsu no Taizai over Fairy Tail. I mean... how could you not like it after watching an awesome scene like this, and that was only from episode 2! (The good part is in the latter of the video.)

EDIT:

One-Punch Man reminds me a lot of Tentai Senshi Sunred ...well, at least in how they're both heroes and not your standard affair. Although, I'd say the humor in One-Punch Man is a bit different than Sunred. One-Punch Man also has a healthy amount of action in it, where that's not really a focus in Sunred at all.

Honestly, the hard part is that there's plenty of anime with humor in it, but they're not usually action-oriented. If they do have action, the humor is usually just used sparingly. Hell, the original Dragonball has plenty of humor in it. I find that comedic anime tend to focus more on daily life situations.

Pretty much everybody loves Brotherhood. It's on the dark side and evil is a constant companion, but it's not oppressive in its presentation. It is 64 episodes though so you're looking at maybe 30 hours of viewing.

I finished Parasyte earlier tonight, and honestly... I don't get why that series gets such good reviews. Ugh... the characters were so goddamn annoying, and the closer you get to the end, the more they shove the environmental message down your throat ("humans are the real scourge!").

What's the consensus on Clannad here? I love that sappy virgin love story shit.

The first series, Clannad, is fine, but when most people talk about it being "full of feels", they're talking about the second season titled Clannad: After Story.

It appears nobody seconded this.
I'll correct that now and give it a vote.
Cowboy Beebop is old but it's the archetype of classic anime. Amazing story and characters and fantastic animation. Also check out the movies.

I plan on trying most of the popular/classic ones eventually.

Should the first episode of brotherhood start with no introduction and be about an ice alchemist? Because the one I've found is and I'm confused. It looks correct but I have no context.

In this case it's important to get the back story.
Harder to have feels for people you've never met or don't know anything about.

For more sappy feels type stuff there's also Angel Beats (same writers as Clannad?)

Oh, when I went to look for FMA:B, I found a series that you might enjoy: Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu. I don't think you'll need to watch the original series, Full Metal Panic, to understand it at all. Anyway, it tends to put a stronger emphasis on humor with its man-out-of-his-element storyline. If you want an anime with similar amounts of humor but more of a focus on the perverse side of anime, Amagi Brilliant Park is by the same guy that did the Full Metal Panic light novels, and it's quite funny. I laughed so hard at the truth serum episode!

...or if you want an anime that's full of "unfortunate situation humor", check out Detroit Metal City. It's about a guy that goes to Tokyo to follow his dream of playing pop music, but ends up in a death metal band. There's even a live action movie!

Yes, that's episode 1. I checked just to make sure. I agree that it's a bit awkward, but that sort of starting at present day and going back to an important flashback an episode or two later isn't super uncommon in anime. In a way, you kind of get it in One-Punch Man too as you find out how he became a hero an episode or two into the series.

In this case it's important to get the back story.

I agree that you shouldn't skip the first part. I was just mentioning that people like to bring up Clannad as one of "them feels" anime, and that may confuse some after they watch the first season and don't really get that out of it. Although, to be honest, you could sum up the important parts of the Clannad story in a few lines prior to watching After Story and be fine.
The way the two characters fall in love always felt a bit forced to me to begin with.
