I just watched the normal FMA for SO MANY EPISODES instead of FMA:B. Dang it, now I have to rewatch the entire chimera girl storyline because that's the episode I screwed up on.

Which one starts with the set intro, with nothing before it? One has a bit of the episode before the main theme.

I would watch legit (and may try Hulu) but it needs to work in mobile safari and not require any kind of credit card or anything.

Hmm...don't know anything about mobile. There's no credit card needed for the free stuff on Hulu, but don't know if it works on mobile. You'd just have to try. On the website I linked it's clearly marked as brotherhood in a few places above and below the video. When paused the video itself also clearly says you're watching the brotherhood version.

i hate anime

it's so stupid.

back in my days, we had some great anime. Lupin III, Casshern/Polymar/Tekkaman, Kotetsu no Jeeg, Grendizer, Gundam, etc..

they were so cool.

then the second wave came around, with Macross (Robotech), Cat's Eye, City Hunter .. still cool, but starting to get cheesy. Everyone is someone's son / relative. 15yo kids manning battleships. Plots starting to make zero sense.

Then Akira, then the third wave of anime, Ghost in the Shell, Evangelio, Shin Gettar .. great animation, but unbearably stupid plots and characters.

Now we're deep into fourth wave, with One Piece, FMA, Attack on Titan .. the plots and characters are just insane. No semblance of anything resembling real life, not even trying.

I'd love to support it, but I don't have $5, and I don't even know if I'm going to stick with the show.

If you were looking to find something at all resembling real life you should probably not be watching shōnen anime since that is not the point.

If you want that you might have better luck with seinen or josei anime, but even that will take some level of searching.

Also I think your expectations are simply changing. If you watched any of what you thought were "cool" right now you would likely notice they have the same issues that you are pointing out as issues in following anime.

The original English dub turned the story into nonsense and ruined Akira. It wasn't until the Special Edition and Memories that I realized just how good it was. By that time I had seen two different sets of subs and two dubs and had could grasp on the story, so I can't say for sure that the SE would do it alone for a first time viewer. It certainly fixes the problem with the enslaved boy appearing to be some kind of kingpin and Kaneda ranting about bacteria nonsensically.

Did you see the "remake", Cashern Sins?
Certainly a different spin on things.
I thought it was just above decent (i.e. almost good).

no, i did not have a chance.

to be honest, after spending money to buy a DVD (no other way to find it) of Hurricane Polymar Holy Blood i was so disappointed that i wouldn't look for reboots anymore.
And that might actually be one of the better anime reboots out there.

Shin Gettar for example, was horrible. nice animation, mind you, at least for the first 3 episodes/dvds, until the money ran out. but the story ...
i mean .. the last scene the gettar throws a hadouken and shatters a planet.

if you read the manga of gettar, it's super-realistic. so much so that people die horrible and stupid deaths for nothing ... like, random debris killing main characters... totally the polar opposite of the nonsensical mindfuck that shin gettar is.

in the last few years, the only anime i really liked where Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro Chan, Cowboy Beebop, and Excel Saga.

Well, I finished it. I have to say while the entire storyline is a bit odd, that's the reason we write these stories, to get away from the boring normalness of real life. I mean, swollowing god is weird, but I thought the story was well written and reasonably within its bounds. There were some plot holes I'd like filled, and a couple issues with the characters (mostly Edward) but it's not like some others where you know the only reason the characters were so stupid is so the plot could advance.

Now I'm going the miss that little universe though. I'm guessing there is nothing after the events of brotherhood? If not I may try cowboy bebop, though it doesn't look like something I would particularly enjoy.

There was a movie which came out after the series ended, Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos, but chronologically actually falls somewhere in the first half of the series.

FYI, for anyone, the new season of anime starts in pretty much less than two weeks (that's when the majority of them will being airing). I've gone through the list on AniChart and marked up my wills, maybes and won'ts. The only definites so far are the second season of Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (you might like this one, Bubbleawsome), the new Naruto spin-off series and the new Fairy Tail spin-off series. I've already been reading the Fairy Tail Zero manga (a monthly serial), but it'll be fun to see what happens.

That's one of the things that has made me far more despondent when watching anime. Essentially, I know that by the end, the show is going to take some weird-ass turn that makes little sense. It's like the source authors saw too many M. Night Shyamalan movies, and they just love to throw crazy twists in their stories. I think that's one reason why I can watch things like the comedies or sports anime... they usually don't have the dumb twists.

Don't be so apprehensive. Bebop is phenomenal.
