Things are finally looking up. It only took 3 months but finally got a job offer. The even better part is they are going to pay me $15K more per year than what I was previously making. That is mainly because I was severly under paid at my last job.

The bad thing is it is back in San Antonio so I am going to have to leave Houston. Damn just got used to having a Fry's and Microcenter nearby too. Also, they can only guarantee the work for a year since it is contract work. They told me upfront they may scale back down in size after that which would leave me without a job in a year.

Hopefully in a year though the economy starts to stabilize and finding jobs will be easier again.

Congratulations!
I've never had a Fry's or Microcenter near by, so don't feel too bad, lol.
A year of guaranteed work is good

1) Are they covering your relo costs?

2) Since it is a contract job, can you ask for a per diem split from the wages. Save you some tax $$.

They aren't covering relocation costs, just about no one will it seems. I haven't asked about the per diem though.

I have never had relo costs covered as contractor - however, I have had two contracts, cover travel expenses to get to the location (across country). Much depends on their needs and your quals.

its a sad isnt it?

I applied for an ad to a local place the other week. Got a call for a phone interview and turns out it was just a typical PC repair shop type of job. Pay was only $10 an hour. The interviewer said that he had people with Bachelor's degrees and even PHDs apply.

It's rough out there.

Congrats, happy to hear it.

You have the opportunity to make yourself indispensable, work through the worst of the economy (hopefully), and get some references. A year is a long time for that.

Keep track of every penny you spend in locating the postiion, while working there and getting back home. It will be a business expense of one type or another as a contractor.

Paranoid Plank. Hahahah

I'll add to the good news. Got a job offer this morning and will probably take it. I already have a job so I'm not that bad off as it is.

Congrats OP! A lot of people out there with good work history applying for any job these days.
