Alright im new to linux

And i don't know how to do anything! I've been fooling with it for about an hour and have gotten nowhere. How can i install drivers for my D-link wireless NIC, and drivers for my motherboard. how do i unpack these '.tar' files so i can install them. i slapped a bunch of NICs in this thing and want to boot a cluster using PXE and terminal server and then run F@H across it using open mosix. Can anyone help?

At least tell me what i should be doing on this fresh nix install. install the drivers... how? i know how to download them, i got my only working card configured so i can download the drivers, im using mozilla for my browser. i just cant seem to install them, clicking on them like crazy doesnt do anything lke it did in Window$. Help! I'm sure its pretty common nix knowledge so it shouldn't be too much trouble.

Post a link to the drivers you downloaded (if you downloaded the wlan drivers, if you downloaded the nVidia drivers, just let us know). What chipset is on the wireless NIC?

It's time to update my basic unix doc... And my nVidia driver doc. Someone send me an nForce2 system. /me is lazy and broke

tar:
tar is a Tape ARchive program. It creates one file out of many to help with backing up data. tarballs end in .tar. To unpack a tarballs, use the command: tar -xvf file.tar
gzipped tarballs:
A tarball that is gzipped will end in .tar.gz or .tgz. .tgz is more often used for packages of different types, so make sure it is a normal tarball. To unpack these files use the command: tar -zxvf file.tar.gz

I'll have to check out the nVidia drivers. I haven't looked at them since the nForce chipsets came out...

Check your model number of the Wireless NIC. If it is a 650 you should be able to get it to work, but I have read that some people are having trouble with the 650+. Apparently they changed the chipset and the new one may not work.

I don't have a dlink card myself but have had excellent results using a b card with the orinco chipset. Linux likes that chipset. You might even be able to find someone who has upgraded to G and wants to sell theirs cheap.

Alright, when i type 'unam -a' it says "2.4.22-openmosix-2 #4 SMP CET 2003 i686 GNU/Linux"

I checked D-links website for my DLink card 'DWL-520+' and it doesnt look like it ahs a linux driver, does that mean im out of luck? Because Knoppix doesn't even detect the card right now.

Does anyone know of any cheap 802.11b cards supported by linux/knoppix

The D-link card was 'free' so no big loss there

I recently bought an MA-311 card from newegg. It's still a supported chipset. But it isn't cheap.
